--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to get Freelancer working – On a Windows Vista System.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since the arrival of Vista many people have been having problems getting this and many other games working on it.
Below is the way that I used to get Freelancer to work on the Void without problems, hopefully it will be beneficial to some.
This Systems Specs.
OS = Vista Ultimate - 32 bit edition - Version 6.0.6000 Build 6000
Motherboard = P5W DH Deluxe
Processor = Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Graphics = 2x ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT’s running Crossfire.
Memory = Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (4x1GB)
Sound = Onboard Realtek High Definition 7.1
Anti-Virus = NOD32 (IMHO the best you can get)
Firewall = Vista’s stock firewall, set to allow no exceptions – more on that later.
As for the infamous UAC. I have just left that on. Giving FL and the other programmes admin rights at installation
negates the need I believe to disable it.
Please note the above is just for information on the specs of the system I’ve installed Freelancer on.
You will need in addition to your Freelancer disc, Freelancer mod manager, QuickFix-v1.0c and the 2112v4Client.zip.flmod.
All these are available for download from the Void website’s main page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation of Freelancer – lets get started
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Insert your Freelancer disc, it should AutoPlay and you should see this.
(If not navigate to your CD / DVD drive, right click on the Freelancer icon and click explore)
Click on - open folder to view files,
This is what you should see, locate the setup.exe and right click on it and select properties.
Next click on the compatibility tab and tick these two items. Then hit OK.
Now return to the Freelancer setup.exe and double click to start installing.
There will be a final box that pops up asking for permission to run, It’s OK to let it. Install Freelancer as normal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation of the Quick-fix and Freelancer mod manager.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is just as easy as installing Freelancer itself. We’ll install the Quick-fix first.
Right click on it’s setup icon / Properties / Compatibility and set these parameters. Hit OK.
Double click to start installing as normal. You will get the box pop up asking for permission, it’s OK to let it.
Repeat this exactly for the mod manager.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now This Is Important !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the mod manager has installed, right click on it’s desktop icon / Properties / Compatibility and check
that the settings are the same as the picture above. For some reason on occasions it reverts to Vista’s default.
This only tends to happen when you install it fortunately.
If you try and install the Void mod you will get an error message, it takes 2 seconds to check, please do it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation of the Void Mod.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Double click on it as normal and it will install fine.
Please remember to activate it in the mod manager before joining the server.
As I’ve previously stated, I’m using Vista’s stock firewall set to allow no exceptions.
The only concession I made was allowing Freelancer to access the internet.
A popup screen came up asking for permission. Alt / Tab out of the FL main menu after trying to connect, to allow access.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Void Direct Connection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This will work fine if you check the compatibility, right click on it’s desktop icon / Properties / Compatibility and check that the settings are the same as the others.
Your firewall will no doubt block it – if you go to LAN and the server is not there, it’s worth Alt / tabbing just to check if there is a popup asking for permission to allow it and then refresh.
At the time of writing direct connection has just packed up for me, the global server works no problem.

Ok, whats up btw... I was a n00b like 2 years ago and quit for another platform but missed FL recently so I came back (still a noob).... (unfortunately without my ID as my old cpu burned up and I'm now on Vista thx to dell <needed> I am too lazy to partition my HD with Xp so this is how I finally got FL to connect:
1. I followed the above steps (except uninstalling my AV/firewall combo prog) - after which FL would show the Void server and yet still not connect. I tryed everything to UAC to blah blah and nothing. I turned off all security disabled all AV/Firewall/defender whatever
