If he did'nt know his ID code then thats why HE lost his chars. The Multiplayer ID is client side and we are reminde time and again to write it down and put it somewhere safe.
That is the problem mate.

What the lady said.
Since he doesn't know his MPID, he will have to make new chars. It's our own responsibility as players to put that somewhere safe. Admins cannot help him retrieving it.

Even though after the successfull uninstallation/reinstallation of Freelancer a Multiplayer ID should have poped up when starting the newly installed  Freelancer.
A window opens up in wich an ID i written and you're being asked if you want to continue with the current ID (wich should be the old one) or replace it
He could check Start/All Programs/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/Examine My Account ID/ but i doubt it would help him as he has mentioned that no character appear in the window
Another option and in my opinion the solution for this issue is to contact Strail and give him the exact names of his characters
Hopefully Strail can "dig them up from the dead"
ps:tell him to stay up to date with the website when things like this happen again as an uninstallation of his Freelancer was unnecessary given the fact that it was a server related issue

-Wolfie- you are WRONG it st Client side it comes on the disk not from the net it is stored on you PC-
As Frac posted-
PLEASE PLEASE people.. Acquire and Retain your MP Identity code !!!
Do it now if you have not!!
There has been a lot of confusion about how this works.
All Freelancer multiplayer servers ( like the Void )
recognize your Characters/Ships/Money/Rank
by this string of letters and numbers that were generated
the first time you loaded the game!
Without the proper code , you Will Not:
1) Be able to access your stuff.
2) Be able to recreate your Names ( they are in use already )
3) Be very happy!
It is vital that you never loose this code!
This string of characters is kept clientside ( on YOUR computer ) ONLY!!
No serverside assistance is available whatsoever if you loose this number!
We Don't Have It... We Don't Know It... We Can't Get It...
It's Only On Your Computer !!!
Ok, Now that I've ranted and raved.....
Here is the good news.
Freelancer provides a utility for accessing this number.
The path is similar to this ( depending on the drive )
D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\myflaccountid
Write it down Or print it out. Just dont loose it.
If your system crashes , use the code during reload of Freelancer.
As an option .. If you have difficulty with .hta extention files...
you can go directly to your Registry to find your MPID #
Here is the path ....
My computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\microsoft games\freelancer\1.0
DO THIS !!!
Thank You
Scream On!

I always said: write the code on paper.Ancient methode, but don't need formating, cause it work without Windows!
Mb Boss can fix it, but how can he know it's yr code and not mine or another player s code?
So, put it in safe place! ?
