Hey guys how about forming a semi-clan (without the forum/site obligations, just an ingame group of pirates), something like a Guild, made up of just pirates, but only the ones who are known or willing to play the RP as it should be done?
Sounds good, sign me up! :) Hell, I'd even join it if it were a "regular" clan, and set up forums for it. I do like playing a pirate, but thing is, it can get pretty hard if you're alone, chasing a trader, and out come two or three hunters from the tradelane, or maybe even more - let's face it, there are a lot more navy/hunter clan than there are pirates :P That's why I've mostly been using my pirate char only to fight in Sparta these days. And also because I can name only one (clanless) pirate I've met who played it well. (On the other hand, when I see someone stop a trader in an AT full of diamonds, and demand nothing more than 200k tax, well...)
RP again, and with the willingness to display some decent RP - which also means the ingame RP language usage, as Stoertebecker showed us.
I'm all for saying more than "tax 200k", but do I have to speak "Arrr!"? :P I prefer something more along the lines of "Nice cargo you have there, trader, do you happen to have insurance on it?" Then again, I haven't taxed pilots, or traders with no cargo, so far - but I'm leaning towards doing that now. After all, asking for tax in Sparta is the same as asking for pvp, no? :P

No its not that simple

Put yourself in the pirates shoes, he catches a trader, cds him to a stop and starts to type, to try to RP.

By the time you have typed a few words the traders in cruise n dissapearing off your screen, You cannot type and pin another ship it really is as simple as that.
If the trader actually stopped and engaged in some RP with the the pirate giving him sometime to type then it would work, the only other way it will work is pirate gangs but I really dont wanna go there again.

There is no real easy answer, Ive tried solo pirating this week and its impossible, unless you find a "mark" thats up for a laugh, and they are few and far between.

I think your idea of Pirate gangs, like my idea of having a Guild could be ways to make the RP work though m8.
By the way can I point out the following:
Tags indicate that you are playing RP. That is what the [X], the [R], the [A], the [H], and the lot are all about. But there is one more we are forgetting about here: the [T].

Traders wearing the [T] tag, indicate they are playing RP and should be obliged to respond in an appropriate way when approached by a pirate performing a decent role. A lot if not all of the present [T]raders today cba with RP and just wanna make money. But wearing a RP tag ( [T] ) and NOT living up to it is in a way the same as being a Rogue and grouping up with Navy - it's NOT playing your RP of choice.
In that light I would be all for a new rule which reprimands players who do not live up to their RP / tag of choice. However I don't see a way to make this system automated, so that would mean extra in game work for the staff, and I know that's always a stumbling block.
But I do feel it would enhance RP. In the end what's the point of getting a RP tag and not playing RP?  :-??

And don't start about this being 'forcing players to RP' coz it's not. It's about forcing players to play the RP of their choice in a proper way. People not interested could always go freelance. Which in the case of the trader would mean having an untagged trade char.

Hear hear! I agree, you can not carry the [T] tag, then when it doesn't suite you deny the (properly tagged) pirate his bounty (being RP and tax or cargo).
I am just not certain, does it mean, proper pirates can no longer tax freelancing traders?

I'm not sure about that one, Mokum...it's up to the staff.  I'm all for giving the trader the choice whether or not to RP...but I don't know...I think that people would drop the tags because of pure laziness.

But I think that the whole pirate RP is a little bit funky.  I'll admit that I haven't been playing it the way I should.  I used to jet around in my little Deimos, taxing every freelancer I saw and engaging with navy pilots.  But a few days ago, I did a little experiment, asking for cargo instead of tax.  I actually scared some people enough to hand it over, and believe me...hunting down a trader across multiple systems is actually quite fun.  As a result, I finally caved in and changed the way I play the RP.  From now on, everything's going to be about the cargo, so now I'm flying a Thoth.  Meaning that I'm going to be forced to act like a pirate from now on; hunting targets, sneaking around in the shadows, and avoiding confrontation with the navy whenever possible.  Meaning that even though I've been sitting around in Sparta pvping using my pirate ship, (I'm trying to get the hang of fighting in a Thoth just in case I need to take down an escort or two) you won't see me there very often once I finally have a fighting chance out in the black.

Being a pirate means that you can ask everyone for a tax or a cargo drop no matter the tag he is wearing or if he is a friend or foe to you.
If times are desperate you can even refer to a fighter pilot or a fellow pirate and ask for a  tax/cargo drop.
You will most definately be called a noob by them (becasue that's how things are around here) but if you're a true Pirate and stick to your role you can't possibly be bothered by all the rubbish being thrown at you.
But then again why would someone choose to do all this if they can just make things much easier and create an [R] char wich will enable them to shoot the living crap out of everyone without any questions being asked.
(also "contributing" to the RP of the server by doing this)

Heads up boss: It still seems to be that it does effect players fighting NPC's. And it also still works long after the music has died out and the NPC's have left.
