Anybody else's AVG + Vista system quit working with Freelancer?

YES!!! Finally figured out what was blocking me.  So I was looking around in the services after disabling the firewall and there's this one called "IP Helper" that basically says it automatically changes your connection to IPv6.  So for those of you still having trouble try this out!

Also, after trying a few things out I can still connect even with Firewall and Defender on as long as that IP Helper stays off.

After hours of trying to figure out how to connect to the online servers i finally figured it out... AVG is no good anymore.. I tried disabling everything i could in AVG and using every other trick i could think of but nothing fixed it. Finally I uninstalled AVG, and voila! Connected instantly...

And I played for hours with no probs.. i left my comp. on overnight.. and got up this morning, tried to connect, and i get this error saying "operation is taking too long, press ESC", so when i press ESC, i get the standard "cannot connect, server was interrupted, may be due to connection settings, etc" error... This sucks..  :(

Ok.. I finally figured it out.. There's a number of things to tweak if you cannot connect to the server..

1. Uninstall AVG if you have it.. or any of the other blacklisted AV programs, which can be found in the setup guide found in this forum.
2. Completely Disable Windows Defender AND Windows Firewall through the Control Panel.
3. If you use a router, Set port 2302 in the router. You can find guides on how to do this for your specific router all over the net, just search Google for "Port forwarding".
4. Right Click on the Freelancer shortcut on your desktop, select the properties option. Make sure the "Target" field looks like this:
   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe" -s85.14.217.82:2302   EXACTLY as i have posted it, quotations and spaces and all...
   NOTE: You may need to change the Drive Letter (C:\) with the drive YOU have the game installed on.
5. Select the Compatibility tab in the Freelancer shortcut properties menu. Set it to run in WinXP compatibility mode.
6. Always run FLMM and Freelancer as an administrator.. You may need to right click and select "Run as admin", or this can be set  in the properties menu of the Freelancer shortcut.

Now run the game and you should be able to connect.. IF you still can't, it's likely an issue with your specific brand of router...  I used to have an SMC router and could never connect no matter how i set it.. I got a new router and didn't even need to set the ports, and now i can connect great..

I cant remove my Avast with the remove tool ...I hate avast >__<...Says something about Avasts self protection tool.

for uninstaling avast use a special software for uninstalling progs available in google

ah i forgot , Strail , plz , put AVG on THE BLACK LIST !

We all have prob with it so remove it from the white list coz it takes peeps to the wrong place..

I've tried everything in this thread but it's still not working.

I've used a tool to check the ports I need are open, which they are.  I've tried using IP protocol 4 instead of 6 which I have, even though Vista has both so that shouldn't matter too much.  I have none of the Anti virus program that are suggested.  I do have Symantec which is similar to Norton but gives me no problems in any other single game and neither should it.

Direct connect doesn't work, running it as admin doesn't work.  I could understand not being able to join anyone elses server but I can't even join my own, it's just wierd.  My friend can join my server fine, I just can't seem to join anyone elses or my own.  I've even tried this with Hamachi which is a direct 'tunnel' VPN connection which ignores ports and firewalls etc.

I've had windows defender off scince I got this PC and turning off windows firewall made no difference at all.  The game is allowed through the firewall anyway.

Starting to run out of ideas chaps, if anyone could suggest anything more or help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated.  I just want to play Freelancer on a server with my friend.  I have no problems with hosting/joining servers in any other game, just this one.  I really don't understand it, please help guys!

Could still be the Symnatec app mate. Worth a try uninstalling then reinstalling it again after you've tried to use freelancer?

I would except it's a pretty good anti virus and it came with my copy of Vista.  If I uninstall it, then I'd have to buy it to get it back and I don't fancy paying $40 or £30 upwards to get it back lol.

I can't understand why these anti virus programs would effect this game only and non of the other hundreds of games I have.  I mean it was made by microsoft studios, if a game were to have compatibility with anything, it'd be one of these..

Here is what I've tried:
01 uninstalled AVG 8.0 FREE
02 turned off Firewall
03 stopped firewall service and deactivated in SERVICES.MSC
04 stopped IP Helper service and deactivated in SERVICES.MSC
05 disabled IPv6 in Network Connection Properties
06 opened port 2302 on router (TCP and UDP)
07 disabled Windows Defender service and deactivated in SERVICES.MSC
08 running Freelancer in Windows XP compatibility mode
09 running Freelancer in Windows 2000 compatibility mode
10 running Freelancer as Administrator
11 running fldirectip.hta in EXE folder with IP entered
12 running MSXML3.MSI in REDIST folder on Freelancer CD
13 rebooting (times infinity)
.. maybe more but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.  

Any other suggestions?  I installed and played this game at work today on XP just fine, I came home and tried playing it on Vista and I've been on crazy chase ever since as you can see.  Any suggestions would be grrrreatly appreciated!

OMG, wow.  so one of the last things i tried was removing AVG.  Guess the F what.. behind all these windows I had open was a notification, "YOU MUST REBOOT AFTER UNINSTALLING AVG" .. so I rebooted and life is good!  See you online!  Thanks for reading my long long rant.  hopefully this will contain some extra things to try I dug up from additional sources for the next sorry sap.
