OK, I've heard some complaints about RP tags both here and in game, so as a long time FL and RP player I thought I'd propose a list that I have seen used on other servers and/or ran on my own servers. Feel free to feedback, but remember:
Fracture wrote:...
RP in Freelancer is the Players Responsibility.

RP in Freelancer is the Players Responsibility.

Oh , did I say ???
RP in Freelancer is the Players Responsibility.

Scream On !
Frac
These are the ones most used, from what I see in game:

[X] = Pirates Tax Anyone they choose
[R] = Rogues Don't have friends they KOS to everyone
[T] = Traders move cargo

X and R are the only tags with official rules. Here are some other tags to consider:

[M] = Mercenary

This also would include the sub-group [E] for Escort, tho escorts usually fade away from lack of jobs is what I've seen.
Mercs flourish best on servers with system battles, as clans see the benefit of hiring muscle,
especially if they're a Trader clan who need more fighters for the battle.

[H] = Bounty Hunter

[A] = Assassin

[K] = Killer

Bounty Hunters hunt for Lawful clients and Assassins hunt for Unlawful clients. Advertise on the forums for jobs and hires.
I can tell you from long experience that it's impossible as an Assassin or Bounty Hunter to sneak up on prey in FL.
So I prefer the [K]iller tag to represent all killers for hire AND just a character to be wary of. In this way it's easier to RP as when a [K] enters your system whether you are a Pirate or Lawful you don't know if he's after you. This guy is a killer for hire, all  should beware!

[N] = Nomad

The aliens of course, on a server like Void a real possibility. Like [R]'s they are enemy to all, but unlike [R] they can group with other of their race and form clans.
All humans should put aside rivalry and fight back the Nomads. (Needless to say this is advanced RP and usually needs admin help)

[P] = Police

This is Lawful factions, both Police and Navy, House or Corporate. (Not N since that's Nomads)

[F] = Freelancer

What this means is I stay independent. I'm a solo act, please don't bother me with recruiting drives.  Saves a lotta bad feelings.

[$] or [S] = Shop

Shops sell rare goods, and are usually found in NY where it's safe. Neutral usually.

RP tags are useful, even for Clans remember new players don't know your clan RP!! I prefer RP tags at the end of the name.

Disagree (sorry) with Carthoo - If you are in a Clan you should operate by that clans RP.  A tag gives your opponent some idea as to whether or not you are "friendly".  As a Freelancer untagged character you are free to behave as you wish - just be prepared to reap the wild wind if you tick off the wrong people - :)

@ Frobozz - too many tags makes life foar too confusing - a [K] tag? What for, when you already have an [R] [M] & [A] tag...Pointless. [T] tags - whilst "nice" should refer to those fying freighters as a rule - but it doesnt. I have met too often with Anubis mk2 and Vipers carrying [T] tags? As an RP tag it makes no sense unless you have guidlines and rules.

Whilst agreeing with URAMI (R's shooting R's) it is sometimes worth noting that given the right circumstances and where it suits their purposes R's have been known to band together against a common PITA.  This should only last for the duration of the necessary conflict and then its "business as usual" and not all the R's are up for it.

As far as I am aware the VOID only has two "official" tags - thats X and R.

To answer URAMI's question -

[A] - Assassin - A paid contract killer that works on a person to person basis and is paid per kill. No loyalty to client other than $$$ and by honour of the contract.

[M] - Mercenary - A paid contract killer that works for a particular client, undertaking the orders of that client in a war against other clans. The contract normaly stipulates a time period and an agreed fee for the length of time / sucess of the contractor agains the enemies of the client.  No loyalty to client other than $$$ and by honour of the contract - however  - these tags are not to be trusted as they can easily turn sides for money. To be watched at all times...

Its not a big difference but it is an important one if you are going to run the RP properly. Assassins kill specified individuals on a one to one basis. Mercenaries go to war with clients enemies for a specified time period and fee.  That at least is my take on the RP.

Cheers - Zeb

Sorry Zeb I wasn't clear. My point was let [M] (Merc) rp all muscle for hire; whether as a soldier or escort or guard or whatever and [K] (Killer) rp all those who specialize in killing for hire, whether as Bounty Hunters or Assassins. I must admit I'm unclear on what the  [T] tag means here I only know what it means on servers in general, but yea I don't see why the tag is used myself, why isn't a T a freelancer? What I advocate is the following tag system:

[X] = Pirates

[R] = Rogues

[M] = Mercenaries

[K] = Killers

[P] = Police/Navy

[$] = Shop

(For what  these mean in detail look @ my last  post, [N] and [F] would require admin approval so not included)

PS: Note that [M] and [$] and [K] have no inherent good/evil alignment. In old AD&D terms [X] is lawful evil and [R] is chaotic evil.
Tags are in no particular order. Oh, and remember these tags are most useful to non-clan characters.

Sticky since 2007?

This is a clear exemple of that we need a clean up of old threads.

I don't know if keeping this as sticky is such a bad idea.
It needed a bump though and THANK YOU for doing this buddy.
Is a think to be discussed and who's results should be seen in the rules of the server.

There were talks I've seen over X and R tags and expressed my opinions in there.
Would be nice to see an overall discussion - i mean about all tags...
