Freelancer - The Void

Hi, i am hosting a server that will hopefully be a dedicated server soon.  I have Successfully had a friend connect over the internet to the server and it is displayed on the Server List, somewhere around 50-60.  I am not -plugging, I have a question.  Today i installed Freelancer on two Vista hard headed computers.  I, and the friend,are both running Windows XP and have no problem Connecting to the Server.  Then vista computers however, are able to see the server and all the other servers, but are not able to connect to it.  I have disabled the firewalls on the computers, and i have allowed and even tried a direct connect to my server.  All to no avail.  No connection.  Both computers are running a version of Norton, but i am too and have no problem.  Is Vista and Norton and bad combo, or is it just norton.  I tried disableing the UCA in vista, and i lost all but the local server, and still could not connect.  I aslo tried running the program as an Admin.  Any Ideas?

BUT i can think of only 1 reason why someone will use MS Vista - Halo 2 (cause of DX 10,wich makes no diffrence)
If u want the perfect OS for games,install win XP+SP2
If u wanna do some work with ur PC,install ubuntu.

I totally agree, i have been running Windows XP since the first time i downloaded it.  I swear by it and even bought a laptop with Vista and # Gigs of Ram and still installed XP.  But the problem   is, i still have friends, who know very little about computers and stick to their "legal" copies of Vista.  So, I am stuck  :-w  troubleshooting their vista problems  :-??  so that they can join my Lan parties and play along.  P.S. Am I allowed to Plug My server.  It is not much now, but I will have it dedicated by next week and hopefully have a website to support it and it's users.

I too have a lap top running Vista Business, I even tried the Mod Manager for Vista Beta and it does not allow me to play freelancer from any server on the internet. The game from the disk is outstanding, my guess is a compatibility issue. I never thought about running XP while keeping the Vista on the laptop.

yes this topic had been made before by zeb i think who had the same issue of connecting
i read that norton was not made compatable for vista, i think you will need to uninstall norton completely and install an antivirus which is suitable for vista
hopefully there is one such antivirus and its free...you can use the AVG free version i think it may work...

and also vista does have issues with mod manager...on the other hand if your looking to use the new void mod it dosent need mod manager

thanks guys, that was my next step.  I will try today to uninstall Norton from one of the Vista computes and we will see how things go.  ---Off Topic---- I think i once had a way to change the way people started the game on my server, like starting with more than 2000 Credits, but I do not remember the software i used to generate that...  anyone know it?  PS - I am running an unmodded server.

and for your next request,
you must navigate to the EXE folder and open mpnewcharacter.ini as a text document (using notepad)
then you will find money = 2000
change it to whatever value...
the maximum cash for unpatched servers is 999999999
you can also edit the ship you startout with,your location and start rep (you must know the ini names for ships,factions,etc)

maybe you should use the void mod on your server and host it until the real server comes back (if the A - Team is OK with it)....just a thought

I will consider it.  But it would not happen until next week, it would have to be dedicated first, i don't think my current config could handle that many people at once.  so for now, i am keeping a limit, but noone with excepting to the one person i sent here has joined.  but thanks for the info.

At a guess id say its the Norton Firewall blocking you, try diasabling or, or setting ot to allow all traffic, you will then know if it is this that is causing the problem.

Personnal i'd get rid of it ASAP. PM me if you want advice about Firewall and Antivirus products to replace it.

Yeah, Vista mmm..

I had it with my new computer also.  I used it for about 2 months, or so..  Then i swaped back to Windows XP Professional + SP2.

None of the Norton Antiviruses work with the Freelancer game.  They will all block it from going online, believe me, i've tried over 50 times.  I moved to AVG Antivirus.  It works good with Vista, and i have had no problems so far.  I would recommend it, it also has a good Antivirus protection, and its free.

Run Freelancer as "Administrator" too.  Otherwise it could close down and say "This program has stopped working"

Go to your FL Icon, Right click it, Properties, Compatibility, Tick the box "Run this program as Administrator"

Once that is all done, FL will work smooth  ;)

But i would recomment swaping back to Windows XP with SP2.

Vista is not much use for  gamers.  Too many problems.

I beg to differ. DX 10 makes all the difference in the world... at least as it pertains to newer games anyway.

The machine I am currently running on is a dual-boot system, with a 500 gig hard drive loaded with Vista and a 320 gig hard drive loaded with XP.

Though I never have successfully managed to get Freelancer running on Vista online.(I REFUSE to trade my MacAfee Virus protection for some shady freeware, which is apparently required to run FL on Vista online...), but the game works wonderfully on single-player.

Now, I have Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow Six Vegas for PC. Just for grins and giggles I uploaded both games onto both drives. As you know, XP only goes to DX 9 and Vista will use DX 10.

The difference is STAGGERING. CoD 4 runs much, MUCH more smoothly in both the graphics department and the overall fluidity of the game when run on Vista with DX 10. The same holds true for Rainbow Six Vegas. Direct-X 10 is the difference there, as far as I can tell and have been told.

It may not make a difference with older games but *shrugs*  it may just be my imagination but even FL looks and runs more smoothly on my Vista drive than it does my XP drive.  I'm no computer wizard or anything, but I do know that DX 10 is more advanced with better capability than DX-9.

Just an opinion, but one based on personal experience and what I believe to be fact.

Well, uninstalling Norton fixed the problem instantly.  No issues at all with it gone.  So, i have installed AVG as a backup and all is still running well.
