rules and sanctions

See the poll question above. In my opinion, doing this should've been important before, but in light of recent events, I feel it is even more important now, so I'm making this poll to see how many people agree that this is an issue - and so that it's not just me, but we who are asking(!) the admins.

The Void server's rules state a number of transgressions, but they don't state clearly what the sanctions are for breaking them. There have been a number of precedents in the past, but after some recent events, these have been called into question, so I think it's time that all the rules be made clear: that players know what to expect to happen when somebody crosses a line. Since all players are equal on the server, defining what sanctions might be would also quite effectively dispel any doubts that there might be about that.

There is also the question of licences, and tags. Are such things such as the assassin/rogue/etc tag's rules still in effect, and if so, what are the punishments for breaking them? In my opinion, these should be made clear as well.

This was just my two cents. I know that this is not a democracy, and I'll repeat that I'm only asking the admins to take this into consideration. But I'm also making a poll to see how many players would support this. So, please vote, and if you have something to add, give your opinion too. Thanks!

I can understand where you are coming from, but to me it's "no".
Reason:
The rules section should be as slim as possible. The fewer rules, the less it will be "courtlancer" instead of "freelancer". Admins and Voids should decide on case-to-case basis what to do with rule breakers. They may use internal guidelines for this, but they (the guidelines) don't need to be posted in public.

Cheers

Thanks for your opinion, mate. Could you tell me why do you think that's a better idea? On many other servers I've played on (not just Freelancer), on the majority of places the possible sanctions were all listed. To me, it seems things work better that way, for the reasons mentioned in my original post. Not to mention that this isn't about adding new rules, it's about making the existing ones clearer.

Good point.

I'm for a yes and a no.

Yes, because some rules really need to tell the exact sanctions, for exemple.
Cheating. The cheater see that a cheater got banned one week... He thinks "hahaha only one week? then i should try to modify some numbers and kill and proove that i'm the best!!!" - a kiddy attitude -
So, Sometimes some cheaters get banned forever, some banned for one week.
Is there a difference between a cheater and another? If yes, then are we really all equal on Void?

Cheating MUST be resulted at one sanction : banned FOREVER

No, because of this :
There is two kinds of swearing :
1- The nerves were hot, The guy wasn't on his day, he sweared like "f*** off" after he got killed for e.g. .  This should result in 3 days or 7 days or 4 etc.... Because it DEPENDS of the situation AND the words.
2-There is the kind of swearing like "hahaha looks that nazi he plays the serial killer!!" (the one who sweared knows that the other is german). Means that he insults Germans.
Or when a guy insults Muslims, says that they're all talibaans, and that jew must kill them all.
Or any other insults at ANY religion, or ANY race.

This must be sanctionned with a perma ban. Why? Because Void is for all : all cultures, all nationalities, all races. Void mustn't tolerate that. - That's what i've seen on another server and i agree completely -

What I've mentionned are only two exemples, There should be many more, but i said them because they're one of the most important reasons for a ban in my sight.

Best Regards
Viper

I'll exaggerate a bit, so my point gets a little clearer.

"No killing players below level 20. Offense will be punished by 7 days ban. If it was provoked by the low level player, ban may be reduced to two days. If the low level player acted in bad intent, he may receive a ban of 7 days instead. In case the offende ...[and so on]"

vs
"No killing players below level 20".

I really prefer the latter.
Keep the rules text as simple as possible. Not everyone has the mind of a lawyer, and not everyone speaks english that well.

Let -ultimately- the voids and admin decide which punishment shall be dealt out. If you don't trust any of them at all, maybe you should move to another server anyway.
Cheers

edit: about possible sanctions: why not a global "all rule breakers will be sanctioned up to a permanent server ban, depending on circumstances"?
as McViper pointed out so correctly, circumstances can vary wildly.

That's why it should be sanctionned by the situation in some ban's reasons, and sanctionned with a fixed sanction with another reasons.

depents for the thing whats been done, if its hacking i would say yes but if its like regening i would say no since it isnt fully explained

i think before this poll there should come a solid and clear topic whats allways in the recent topic list with: Void Rules

with some solid rules+sanction if u disobey them (im not refering to my rp rules topic if people are wondering)
talking about global server rules.

CheerZ

as i said it depents on the thing what happened, thats why there should be a clear and solid topic: Voted other

*is to lazy to read the above posts

I'd say rewrite all the damn rules and inclue the penalty for breaking them. seriously these rules are outdated and some like the [R] rule isn't even enforced <_<, delete all rules, insert the rules that IS enforced (swearing, cheating, etc) then make new rules for the server that you will acutly enforce with the penalty you specify in the rules =/

@ Shiver, regening is allowed and is not a bannable offence ;)

I say leave them as they are now. Just add the neccecary stuff. [Not the punishment you will get.

I mean, look at the cheat banned recently. He only got 7 days. If i'd be a newb, i'd go like ''ohh only 7 day ban IF they find it out?''

You'll open the flood gates by this.

''Only x amount of days if swear the ... out of him???''

Just update, dont add the punishments.

I voted no.

Keeping the server rules updated to fit the community that uses the server at the present time is a good thing but making them over complicated is a bad thing.

Any outcome of a possible ban and its level should be kept behind closed doors and discussed by A + V away from us lot IMHO.

If you start showing rules with the sanctions for breaking them set out in stone then it wont be long before we start seeing threads where players are asking for player bans because the rules say this or that and have been broken. I know things like this are supposed to be done via PM but it will happen, you know it will. Sometimes the heat of the moment takes over and instead of logging off...its posting in the forums instead!

I dont want to log onto the forums just to see a constant stream of "players should be sanctioned" posts and the following arguments and flames from friends and clan mates...do you?

Please dont make the rules over complicated  :)

That is a good point. However if we found a way to make it simple, it would be very handy to know what action came with what consequence. I think there are some things that should be set in stone, so everybody is treated equal.

Like McViper said, swearing could be the result of a bad day, or a genuinely offensive player. However, you can't exactly blame cheating or messing around with .ini's the result of a bad day.

I think few rules is best... When I first played discovery (my first FL server) there were so many rules - so many exeptions - so many different punishments for breaking certain rules ect I simply could not be arsed. For example, if you want to fly the Titan, then you must get a corsair liscence, mount only corsair weapons, and stay in corsair systems. When I came to the void I thought - right - got that - wont do that - lets enter the void  :D  I think this layout would be good enough:

rule 1: no cheating;/hacking

rule 2: no swearing

rule 3: no under level killing

rule 4: no harassment

rule 5: have fun  ;)

faliure to abide by the rules will result in disciplinary action, ranging from  moving the player ship to a far away system, to a permenant ban. Just play the game and have fun  :)
My opinion anyway.

Well, there's one very important thing I forgot: it's better to make the rules clearer because right now, some of them are ambiguous. I refer to this one, in particular:

Any players found to be using any other mods than that of the Void mod will be banned.
Any players found to be hacking game files in any way will be banned. Any players found to be cheating in any way shape or form to the detriment of the server, fellow player or Admins will be banned.

As far as I can tell, everyone thought that by "will be banned", the rules meant "will be permanently banned". However, as was the recent case with Aurelius, it didn't mean that: he was banned, true to the wording, but only for seven days.
In my opinion, if the rules were clear on this and said "will be banned for seven days, or permanently" then there wouldn't be any debates about this now.

Not to mention that as of yet, there are no rules about players trying to circumvent bans. In my opinion, that is a very disrespectful action, but apparently even that isn't enough to "earn" a permanent ban. It makes me wonder what exactly is, and I'm not a new player here: so what would they think?

Frankly, i think, in the civiliesd world, the order was instaured with rules aka punishments, not with nice words...
I am 4 the increasing of the discipline , with the assumed rysk of be banned 4 nothing... :-??
