Roleplay or Egoplay

Post by XXX »

Today i was on my usual pirating rounds, taxing traders who came into New Tokyo, over the last week its been rather good, business is good, people paying taxes etc, great.

but today brought an unexpected ingredient into the game, a trader in a A.T with cargo entered into New Tokyo, as always i give forth my needs to trader in the form of " 200k tax" , expecting a payment or some rhetoric like " suck me you scurvy pirate" or possibly a " lick my mother you Sirius scum"

none of that though from this trader, he possessed some really unique comebacks, and he quite literally did, he came back as another character , a fighter in the name of --

'BBD Majestic one' , and came to where i was for a fight, i won, that fight, he came back again, he won.

my point is, i myself don't see the dignity in that sort of action, to switch char's liek that is just as good as running away, which is ok if your running away in the char i asked tax for, but this is a kind of ego which does no good for role play.

there have been may traders who actually like to pay tax as it adds to their game, there world, and there role as a trader.

money isn't the issue , but a certain continuum to sustain that belief.

i would like to hold a vote and you can make comments also , to see how many people out there who find this kind of tactic acceptable and well within the unwritten rules or philosophy of the game void.

backup your votes with comments too if you feel .

I'm not sure this would be an ego issue. Lord knows i've done the exact same thing ot other pirates.

Quite frankly i really don't see this to be an issue. He's got a fighter character, he's got a trader character. If i get taxed too many times sure as the world i'll switch to my fighter character too.

Only one thing wrong his language.
For the rest well pirates are to be fought nomather how many times.
I shot myself a pirate 20 times in one day :D

Pirates are to be hunted and putt down. Thats the hole idea.
People should fear pirates and pirates should fear naval and police forces.
It's the way of the world.

But he came for revange and there is nothing wrong with that.
I've i saw you i'd kill you myself ( or atleast try )just because you are a pirate. You don't need to tax me i'll shoot you anyway.

So i don't know wy you complain beside his bad language.

You'r protector Inf.

BBD hunts pirates. If we find a pirate or hear about one we go after him.

Would it have made a difference if he'd called a BBD m8 who was nearby? I don't think so. The trader... and you didn't say if he ran, paid, got blown up or F1'd out and into his Navy uniform... reported the pirate and the Navy responded. It doesn't matter if it was the same player playing two characters or not. The key is, two different characters playing their Role in the RPG environment.

You're right to tax and handle it however you want in your RP as a pirate. BBD's right to respond in their RP.

That's the Game.

Well put Watchwolf. If he F1'd out of it then that is a bit lame. If you burned him badly and nicked his cargo - then I guess he may feel the need for some justifiable retribution. The player may have spent some time getting his cargo to New Tokyo and you put paid to all his work with one stroke. I would not be best pleased myself - but thats what it says..." Pirates operate in most systems..." BEWARE! There are far to many LAZEEEEEEEE pirates that sit outside major planets and at system gates, taxing the unfortunate traders, instead of going hunting around the system to see what they can dig up. Thats all part of the game. A trader's life is a hard one. Don't gripe about it if they come right back at ya... I have found that some Pirate Ego's are very delicate. They will remain nameless. DTA are one of the best clans here where their RP is concerned (in my hunble opinion) - There moto should be "shut up and fight!" The ADMINS are watching for misbehavior - otherwise - Play on and SCREAM ON....! :D

Firstly, I would like to clarify that my language was not obscene. XXX was pointing out possible comebacks which he expected the likes of me to use. Instead we debated about the issue rationally.

I think that we did discuss some very good points regarding the issue yet the I believe it was based on our difference in opinions. My reason for switching characters was purely for self-preservation, of which I was incapable of in an armoured transport. Additionally, being a member of BBD, I do not tend to negotiate with pirates, any form or fashion which is why I returned in force, as opposed to giving in credits.

Watchwolf is right in saying that we both stood by our different RP's so perhaps we have raised a different issue of how clear exactly Roleplay is on Void.

I don't think neither of us are right on this one.

Lloyd

I think Role play must be finished.. no broken by "F1"..
So if I have my trade char and I am taxed by pirate I have 4 thinks to choice:
1. Pay tax
2. kill pirate
3. killed by pirate
4. try to espace or dock

After one of these choises, roleplay was finished im my opinion. But it isn't good when trader after this words "pay tax XXX credits" press F1 and change his char or leave server. Roleplay must me finished, then can trader change to his fight char and go kill him :)
Only my opinion.. not only for this one situation.. my view to all these RP business and pressing F1.

That just about says it all. If I'm ever complacent enough to be caught unescorted in my freighter then I'll either make a run for it or pay. If I get to dock I'll swap chars but only then. If you're going to trade you have to be aware that there may be someonme out there waiting for you. I'll never tire of the satisfaction of seeing my would be taxer getting nailed by my escort!

OK, this is just my opinion on the whole pirate thing. I really hate pirates. I spend a lot of time finding good trade routes. Then running those routes in a slow, defenseless frighter only to get blowed to hell by some pirate. I respect

the game enough not to F1 out of the situation but once killed I will switch to another character and go after the pirate that killed me. Even if I don't kill them I come after them over and over again. At least, maybe someone else will get thru the area while they are fighting me.

If I see them again days later I will jump them no matter what they are doing. My fighting skills are not that great yet, but they will improve and I have a long memory.

well for me at least sticking to character you are curently flying is bottom line of role-play beyond which lies lame ruining fun for everyone experience... i totally disrespect people/clans who while flying traders and got caught by pirates switch to their fighter characters..this is nonsense. It was your choice to jump into dangerous space in trader alone without escort or back up now deal with it. switching chars in firstsight of trouble is as lame as fleeing. fortunately such tactic is used by minority of players. c'mon how lame would it be if all players behave like this..: navy/pirate/traders switching characters in the middel of flying just beacuse odds favour specific side at this moment.

Personally, I don't agree with taxing traders in the first place. I understand that does not appeal to everyone and some prefer to just trade and explore the universe in that way, however, I think that taxing traders is an easy way to express authority. Back when I was playing on Jolt, I was a member of a fairly notorious pirate clan there, and we would only ever tax fighters for the sole purpose that we would receive an equal challenge. We felt that traders would only be standing on one leg if they were to be confronted by us for tax. The only reason I trade on void is to generate credits to fuel the war, as the war does not fuel itself! I'm sure like the most of you, in a single evening, I can burn through millions of credits just funding ammo costs. Unfortunately I don't have enough time on my hands to spend trading thoroughly as my primary account is of more importance, which is where the majority of my RP lies.

Once again this is only my view upon the situation.
