Rules need to be enforced; such a rule would only cause hard feelings and a lot of frustration and argueing if in effect.

Heres my opinion.  :D

When they are in a trader they have a couple of choices. Pay or Die. Quite simple really, They lose there cargo and then they also have to buy some more. Its there loss.

But with fighters. I think that they should feel the need to pay the player. They fought valiantly to the death. And then they lost. Maybe then they should pay as the pirate has beat them in a fight and may have to repair etc.

This would make for some Good RP and would be a nice practise. Just a way to acknowledge some good pirates and how they would be able to beat other players for there money instead of farming off defencless ships.

Greaver.

I am missing what you are saying here m8.  I killed you and the traders last night when you passed me.  I didn't show favoritism.  Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying.  But once I kill a trader twice, I let them go if I see them a 3rd time.  :)

I think that if a player runs away from a tax the taxer should hunt them down and kill them if he/she is really bothered.

Agree with ghosty on this and appreciate DTA Ghosts own "trader rule". I have had a great deal of fun in Babylonia as my Pirate. I chased down a trader and his escort, and I learned a new trick. I engaged the escort. He regend - which is ok because he was taken by surprise and I followed suit. I wasted him. I then asked the trader for tax. Silence. I made it a simple request. More silence and an attempt to dock. So I wasted the trader. By this time the escort was back and not to be surprised a second time. We fought. He regend. I regend. He ran out of regen and then sent me a request to group. I, somewhat foolishly, took this as an attempt to parley as he had come to a standstill. Sensing that I might be able to make some cash, I was distracted as I went to accept his invite - He then blindsided me. He and his trader took off and I attempted to hunt them down. They are on my list.   (grrrrr....!)

People complain about Pirates being ruthless. One wasted my mate in his AoF colours and he got me cold (not in AoF colours) I docked. He waited. I asked why he had chosen to waste my partner instead of asking him for tax. His response was "its the fear factor". In order to get a quiet life - I paid up.  I too have become "ruthless" in my pursuit of tax - cos believe me those pesky traders   love to flip you the bird if they get half a chance.

Whilst on the whole, my AoF are not too keen on the Rogues, we do have an empathy, and some sympathy with the Pirates - it is tough.  If I can get away with it I wont pay. If I get to negotiate - I will. If I get caught cold and have put a lot of time and effort into a journey I'll pay up.  So here is an idea for you. Youve all seen Pirates of the Caribean, right?

What about the Right to Parley? If a trader asks for this & kills his engines a cease fire is in place until terms can be agreed for payment. If no payment is forthcoming then the victim dies. If the Victim does a runner (which most of them are doing right now...!) then he as declined and forfieted his right to Parley and under such conditions is now KOS.
If they are not quick enough to respond and you either miss or choose to ignore their request to Parley - thats fine - you are, after all a Pirate and not a charity. (BRO are actually quite good at this sort of thing.)

Just a thought from an old space dog.... 8) (Good Thread BTW).

This always happens, nothing new. He didnt pay, and even though you killed him he dosnt pay... what you gonna do? It's just how things work, you cant MAKE people pay tax. Anyway, sounds like you killed him enough so you got him to "pay."

It's a shame that pirates no longer seem to have the power they once did. I remember back in my vanilla days pirate clans used to hamper and dock pin people until they paid at least one member tax. If not, it would prove a hard life for them and they would be hunted until they left. To me it seems as if there are so many extremes in respect to the roleplay on the void. Many people love to RP, yet it cannot be enforced, so players who do not wish to pay tax are almost using the ability not to RP as a scapegoat. I think its more a case of lack of courtesy than anything.

Some servers i've played on inthe past had rough guidelines for pirate RP explaining that if a pirate challenges someone for tax, if the player refuses and gets beaten a few times then it is courtesy to pay up, however, if the pirate is killed then he should call off the tax. This is how It should be really. Nothing about raising the tax amounts, just pure courtesy. Despite being a skilled player, I still like to pay tax to certain individuals who give me a run for my money. Additionally, I look at it from the point of view that in war, I can have 1 or 2 less players shooting at me.

Only my thoughts

Regards

Lloyd

well all i think is if u have to fight the person ure taxing and u kill him then he should pay up but u cant force him to do it so, and if u lose then he/she doesnt have to pay. ive been in my pirate char and ppl dont pay so i just pvp or whatnot as it seems nowadays pirate RP has gone down hill.

Lol, if they introduced player looting here, paying tax would probably pay off. Of course that is entirely unreasonable unless ammo could be purchased at a cheaper rate from further destinations encouraging players to travel more.
