BTW, I though you Brits didn't really consider yourself "European"?
Lol depends who you ask..plenty of people in Britain don't even consider themselves British instead favouring English, Scotish, Welsh and even Cornish lol.

Part of the reasons for this is not only is the British Isles geographically seperate from the European sub continent but there are significant cultural differences as well and the principle language spoken here, English, bears little if any resemblance to other European dialects even though it's constructed primarilly from the same proto germanic language as modern German, Dutch and Danish (and consequently Norwegian).

You also have to remember that for almost 1000 years the people of this island have been at war with one or more mainland European countries, it's only in the last century (WW1 and WW2 not withstanding) that there has been any sort of interaction between Europe and Britian that didn't involve conflict so it's hard for everyone on all sides of the channel to see Britian as a part of Europe. We're getting there slowly though and not as fast as our politicians would like lol.

I know plenty of people who cross out "European" and write "British" on forms that ask and I'm sure plenty of people in Europe itself do that too lol.

Hi

I think it s a mistake to consider past conflicts a form of "non-interaction". I would say it s just the opposite.

People of any time of any ethnicity, took, during wars, the chance to know other cultures and customs thus evolving their own language. I think it was the ONLY way of interaction among people till the era of Market

During the ancient wars between Romans and Greeks, Rome, although winner, was litterally "colonized" by the kaleidoscopic, extremely refined Greek cultures.
Latin (and nowadays' Italian) is in fact full of Greek terms as well as English is "copious" of Latin ones due to the Roman invasions.

I lived part of my life in North Yorkshire, and I ve always seen a great, solid and stable spirit of constructive nationalism (in the positive semantic), rather than the localism and regionalism I expected to find there. And it s really normal for a country unified since Magna Charta: it s something I really would like to see in Italy, a country unified too damn late, till the point that every 70 km the dialect, the kitchen and the overall way of life is completely new. (along with many other side effects)

It s not a lack of cultural interactions nor frequent conflicts; If there is an "obstacle" to the development of a genuine "European spirit", it is mainly political (and/or economical) in my humblest view, being Politics very keen to listen, to preserve and to embody any need, common feeling, hopes nad fears of any population of any Sovereign State by its own nature.

PS I agree with a previous post: this is a perfect example of how diversity can and should work, giving a lesson of how things should go in the actual International Relations.

English  ;)

I'm not actually fussed about the whole European thing, and I don't get why people get so proud of the name "British".

I just say English... cos I'm from England lol

Oh and Fianna... you don't have to be from Ireland to appreciate LOTS OF DRINK lol

Its better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that
you\'re stupid, than to open it and remove all doubt.

NEW ZEALAND, and hella proud of it!!

Home of under appreciated music (which is, coincidentally, great), Landscapes better than ur mums cooking, ugly politisions, places that are Nuclear-free (thank God!), and an accent so unheard of, u would call us Aussies (that is, before we throw some rock hard Buzzy Bee toys at ur face and yell "GET IT RIGHT MATE, WE ARE KIWI!!!")

In other words, better than anything u can shake a twig at!!
