Couple of questions:

Who's going to be the first clan to say, "You're right. My clan  is superfluous. I'm folding my clan." I think we'll see a lot of "my clan's ok, even if we have a low membership... it's THAT clan over there that needs to go."

I agree that there are a lot of clans on the list that are pretty much at Zero. They need to be looked at. But I don't think you can take a snapshot of any clan and say, "You only have 4 members, you need to go." Wouldn't it be more fair to average it over some period of time?

I would propose a annual or twice-a-year clan roll call. I think I said this once before, the last time this came up. Like TV Sweeps week. Every six months you look at all the clan's average active members since the last roll call. Under X-amount, and it gets de-commissioned. Members will have to go solo or join another clan.

The difference between this idea and what I proposed last time if the average. It was rightfully pointed out then that all any clan had to do would be sign up a few new members at roll-call time to stay alive. I agreed, and dropped the idea. But reading this I thought of this new approach.

Certainly something needs to be done.

But here's the other question: Who's going to be the one who will be the Clan Watchdog? No matter what approach is used... Admin has plenty of other things to keep track of. As far as I know there is no way to automatically track Clan memberships. If there is, no problem. If not, maybe we need an appointed player on maybe the same level as Event Staff (but without the cool ship)who will use some defined way of counting active members. Using the plan I propose, to be fair that person will have to list the numbers monthly, giving clans a chance to see what their trend is. Every six months the roll is called and the numbers tell the story. The decisions would have to be final. Or else what would be the point.

Just my 2-credit's worth.

Now, @ Fracture
I know once a clan is official, its not your job, or even under your power to dictate how active its members will be or how well recruiting goes. But i think we can do better with them by simple trial peroids of a few weeks weeks to determine if the clan is truely worthy of title "Official". Monthly activity checks for the official clans forums, if one goes inactive they get a warning and if theyre still cold by the next checkup then their forum doesnt get deleted only disapears for when/if their leader returns.

Now what classifies a clan as inactive?
Under 5 people i suppose but its up to opinion.

the best way i have found to check active members is to use cryo's global stats site.

you click on the clan and it tells you all the active members, including when they last logged in.

i could write a php script that weeds out the ones that have been inactive for X amount of weeks and shows them in a list, . am sure cryo wouldnt mind he has let me design a app using his server stats before (he even helped me out)

admin could then ( or indeed the clan monitor if one was appointed) could post in the relevant forum to say are you active or inactive? and delete the area as required.

the only sad thing bout this is that fallen would probably get the boot as there is only me and luke on regularly now, rest are battling with RL and only on few and far between.

More clans, official or not, more fun, more diversity. The actual policy is good, and the work of admin to support it is very good.

In one hand I think that the ppl are more enthusiastic creating clans if they see facilities to become part of VOID, and more ppl trying to build a clan makes that more clans, and RPs could be succesfull.

In other hand, lot of inactive clans can get confused to some ppl and it is not a nice situation. But this is a ppl fault, because the clan leaders should inform in their forum and admin team when they are inactive, or when they finish the clan.

If clan leaders make their work, you get the solution

some good discussions here :)

my 2 cent as someone whos been around here for a while, including beeing clan leader of a big and later a small clan...

i think clans shouldn't be disbanded forcefully if they dont meet some criteria. That is plain wrong. A lot of good clans had starting problems, sometimes it needs time to work.
Instead, make ppl want to get their clans "bigger" (in number and in presence). There are some ways this can be done...
one way often choosen by some servers are things which belong to regular clans. Be it  claims to systems, own planets, ships, or whatever.
See the problem when a clan gets big is, what to fight for? of course for fun ;) but for what else? Have clan events...perhaps even do a monthly battle, where clans can fight for the "nominal" ownership over something.

See, a lot of players say for example sparta rightfully belongs to saints. What does that mean rulewise or playwise? not much, we never taxed someone there, or prohibited travel or so. Yet its something we were proud of. How did we archive that? Simple... we got our *** up back then and fought for it, against anything anyone could muster against us. (Veterans stil renember the biggest battle im sure.. 5 Saints against 6 entire clan fleets).

So, you want clans to be more active.. thats ok. The admins may be able to help a bit by changing the environment... but the most important factor.. DO something for your clan, wether your the newest member or the leader. Dont wait till the action comes to you.
You are navy? Blockade systems. If there aren't pirates or rogues around.. well.. you are navy, not police. Attack another navy ("for tactical control of new berlin").
You are pirates? BLockade entire systems.. or die trying ;)

you want to go "red dot hunting" instead of pvp? do it, but not alone. Take your clan buddies along. Try to eleminate these peksy corsairs from omicron gamma. Brag about how their ships tumble in front of your guns. Believe me.. its much more fun than just kiling them

you see, the possibilities are endless. Just dont sit around only and ask pvp, thats the death for clan action.
Every clan needs a spirit, and that only comes from doing things together. Else you are just a bunch of individuals who happen to have the same tag,

Sorry for the long rant ;)

Stoertebecker has an excellent point. Nice to see you back, btw. We missed your wisdom and of course, "falling before your guns."  ;)

Blowing away clans for having low rolls is indeed perhaps a bit harsh. Especially for those that have been a part of the Void's long history. Like Gav says, the Fallen would fold under these circumstances, through no fault of their own, game-wise. Lets remember once again this IS a game and real life issues MUST take precedence. To punish a clan because its members have their priorities in order and are dealing with the important things first would be wrong and not in the true spirit of the community that is the heart of the Void. Well said, you two, and a worthy reminder to us all.

Maybe we should first be looking at the standards for starting a new clan. IS it too easy, so easy that they pop up like mushrooms and die as quickly? After that, maybe a weighted factor of how long a clan has been in existence? Becker has another great point. How your clan is active has a lot to do with how active members are. Sitting around inviting PvP's is fine, but going out and picking a fight, right or wrong, is what sparks interest and not just within the clan.

Anyway, another 2 credits in the pot.

Right on Fracture.     =D>

Some may say, Pit Viper, you are the most hard headed of all freelancers who simply refuses to join a clan, so butt out.   Heehee.

But as a Clan Leader of the Lord Knights on another server and as a Clan leader of a Freelancer Trading Clan on another server, I am agreeing with Fracture on this one.

How could a hunderd clans harm a server that has the ability to give them space.  I know one clan, maybe even two or three that Pit Viper recommended others to join who have now become strong, forceful clans on VOID.

Oh, and by the way ------ there is not one person on VOID  imho, who does not think he can be the better clan leader, and indeed gets off a clan to WHAT?  set up his own clan?

So be it.  Let things fall where they may and let clans rise or fall on their own ability and not on more rules, rules, rules.   Void is just right on the amount of rules it governs by.

See u m8.s           <):)

Arch had a good idea, if someone could write a thread detailing a few tips and tricks on how to get a good and active clan that might seriously help.

Now your all in train together about to run poor ol me off the tracks in that walking up and saying "You inactive, bye" is quite harsh. We all have lives and lives take top priority over the void. But regardless, the void is supposed to be fun which takes me back to me thesis "Whats more fun, 35 inactive clans or 10 active ones?" and i think most would choose the latter.

How about a probation peroid, once a clan has been flagged for inactivty give it a month or two to at least try to restore itself to power and give it back the life it clearly does deserve.

A single post in every clan forum requesting an activity would probably be the best start.

Survival of the fittest is the solution.

Bang the "weak clans" till they disband and maybe that way they'll consider joining the "strongest" clans.

Or maybe not.
