Vista Users Inside Please

Well, I had to buy a new comp a few days ago. My new comp has Vista installed on it.

After installing FL on the new comp, I promptly installed FLMM and downloaded the 2112v4 mod from the Void Homepage. Everything was hunky dory until I installed the mod. Near the end of the installation process I got an error warning:

Access to C:\Program Files\Freelancer Mod Manage\ mods\2112v4\DLLS\BIN\content.dll was denied.

Well, the mod showed up in the FLMM mod list nonetheless, so I activated it and went online. Nothing seem to be amiss until I clicked on the word System in the Chat Menu with the cursor. I crashed immediately to Windows.

I then unistalled and reinstalled  FL and FLMM two times, to no avail. Still the same issue with the Chat Menu. And another thing: my scanners couldn't read any modded ships or eguipment. In other words, the equipment definitions or item cards were blank.

Could some tech savy person give this neanderthal a hand. If I cant get this squared away, I'll be relegated to the purgatory of Vanilla Servers!

if you are using FLMM v1.3 then right-click the icon and go to the compatability tab. then choose it to run on Windows XP service pack 2 mode, and try then.

I've adjusted my FLMM to operate as in XP SP2 (per Recoil's advice), but the Void mod still won't load properly. I always get the same error message near the end of the loading sequence: .Access to C:\Program Files\Freelancer Mod Manage\ mods\2112v4\DLLS\BIN\content.dll was denied.

I'm about ready to throw in the towel. The wunderkind at MS strike again ~X(

The other night While attempting to sign into Void online server and during the activation of the void mod my Vista PC, 1st lost all Freelancer ini files; then after i fixed that problem with a back up copy I had stored; due to the fact someone had told me a trick to by pass the intro scenes when freelancer loads; well any way I ahd to restart the PC in any case; and when I did thats when the real bad news came to light :-w  :-? My Boot manager had somehow dissappeared from Vista's OS; and thus My pc would not start up >:P .(i Thought To My self ;I seem to have 2 types of luck lately;1)shitttttttyyyy & (2) Real Shittttttttyyyyy!!!!!!!!; still havnt figured out how but now since ive recently gotten my pc back up& running have'nt installed Freelancer back nor The Freelancer manager. I've read posts that Freelancer leaves your ports open to attacks from a new worm floating about;anyone else heard anything about this?; I read it on a Microsoft vista game site community; seems freelancer leaves too many open ports to key OS critical systems; and perhaps thats the main reason they won't be continuing support for the game after the 2008 year. But in any case I,m trying to discover a way to get my BIOS to recognize my USB drive so I can get XP Loaded on it and forget this Vista system untill They fix alot of its gamming issues.Ive tryed already to create a partition on my SATA Raid drive but it doesnt recognize the internal raid drivers built in to the MB, so Im currently waiting to hear back from Intel on that. Secondly trying to find  a way to hook up my older IDE drives via SATA so That I could install one of my 2 registered versions of XP Pro That are collecting dust.LOL
Well an any case wanted to let everyone know that Im working on the problem any suggestions will greatly be appreciated.Might as well use up the free 60 days worth of nortons that came with the pc;already caught 4 ips trying to break in. Can't say AVG ever gave me that kinda protection.

well if you got a Vista disk with your pc, it should be a bootable disk.

Turn on your PC, put teh disk in, and restart.

Maybe I was nt clear about the PC Recoil The PC's you buy new tday do not come with bootable installation discs; they pre partition the drive with the OS installed; Its not really even your partition ; for its owned by HP and they obviosly own the rights to the disc which the probably use thousands of times on diff system setups. Nothing you buy tday is truely yours, more like you have permission to use this product but not own it!, As far as a bootable disc I had created that the 1st day I had it. Pls stop treating me like an idiot I have been messing with PC's for over 30 years now; and have the degrees to prove it!

Ok I just got Vista, and I downloaded the mod and everything and installed FL.
First problem: The Mod installed the same way as Megiddo's
Second problem: I cant connect to the server. It is shown on the server list but it doesnt connect. Ive disabled firewalls and stuff but it still doesnt work, and Ive set the compatibility to XP. Nothing

You need to right click the Freelancer Mod Manager shortcut icon, choose properties, then click on the "shortcut" labeled tab.

Now, you need to click on the "Advanced" button and tick the checkbox that reads "Run as Administrator".

This usually has to be done even if you have disabled UAC, because Windows Vista automatically assumes that when you disable UAC, it probably involves malware, and leaves a system access prevention process running in the background, that prevents access to the C:\Program Files\ directory.

This system access prevention thing is what causes the access error while trying to modify the content.dll library file inside the Program Files directory and it's subdirectories.

Now that you have adjusted the shortcut to execute it's target as administrator's administrator, it should work.

Also, content.dll is where the infocards content is stored at, hence you are unable to see them properly. It also contains alot of other stuff.

Another option is to simply install Freelancer elsewhere. Put it in C:\Users\XXXXX\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\ , where the series of X's is your intended account's username.

Also, what comes to the "no bootable disc" issue someone mentioned, it means that you have an OEM version of Windows.

Hewlett Packard is well-known for serving it's computers only with the pre-installed OEM version. You can however, reinstall your operating system by accessing the Start menu -> Programs -> Hewlett-Packard -> System Reinstallation . Note that it might not be labelled as System Reinstallation on every Windows installation, depending on your language and regional settings and software version.

See Hewlett Packard manuals for further instructions if need arises(Usually page 112 is what you are looking for in the common HP desktop computer models).

In the mentioned Hewlett Packard computers, you can create the bootable installation CD's. All modern HP computers come with a write-able CD drive. See manual for further instructions.

Other vendors such as Fujitsu Siemens, often pre-install the OS but also provide you with the bootable installation discs(One for operating system, one for drivers and utilities).

If you have applied any unofficial patches to prevent the introduction movies from loading(other than the Void mod itself), and considering that .ini files are initialization or setting files by definition, I would assume that it was a malicious patch, or simply one that does not work.

This implies that you indeed have installed SOMETHING malicious, be it related to freelancer or not. If you use a Hewlett Packard computer, press F10 during the boot-up screen, that has a background picture and commands such as [F2]Setup/BIOS in the bottom edge. This enters the system recovery console.

Enter C:\WINDOWS\ and enter the commands FIXMBR and FIXBOOT.

Restart computer. Should work now.

Do not modify any settings in Microsoft Configuration unless you are sure of what you are doing, as a future reference.

Just refrain from installing any unofficial patches into your system and you will be fine. Profanity does not work as an anti-virus scanner, but your brains do.

If you still experience problems, see the paragraphes above. While Freelancer might leave ports open, this is negated by a proper firewall program(NOTE: Microsoft Windows Firewall does not always accomplish it's purpose), or better, a hardware firewall or a NAT router. Other players are unable of hacking your computer because they can't see your IP address without severely modifying the game files. This should be detected by Freelancer Anti-Cheat software.

The ports that programs open, or use, are for traffic between your computer and other computers through your internet connection. This is in no other way related to the critical processes of your operating system, than the slim possibility(assuming your computer is appropiately protected) of malicious software getting installed on your hard-drive through either internet browser exploitature or deliberate hacking, or you being tricked into downloading malicious software.

Most, if not all, modern BIOS firmwares recognize USB 2.0 port traffic. FireWire however, may or may not work. This can't be guaranteed on all computers, as some don't even have a FireWire port.

Also, if you run as administrator and/or in compability mode, you should be able of playing most Windows games. Not all games work though, due to issues with incompatible networking protocols, or other similar things.

Serial ATA and RAID are two different things. Also, partitions do not require RAID to be operational. You can access, adjust and manage partition settings of Windows Vista through the Control Panel and disk management tools. However, you need to have, or then create the bootable installation disc's inorder to create partitions of your existing C:\ drive if the operating system is already installed, to avoid any errors or system breakdowns.

A partition is made by degenerating the large NTFS drive used by Windows, into a large unused part, which is then cut apart into more unused parts, which are regenerated into NTFS and used as you please. Note that Windows Vista often requires atleast 10-20 gigabytes of hard-drive space to be installed, another 1-3 gigabytes for swapfile, and you might also want some space you can use for software.

All in all, it is recommened to have a hard-drive of atleast 60 gigabytes in size, preferrably much larger if you install many things.

According to what you have written here, it seems that you have been using Norton Firewall and just AVG Anti-Virus. A firewall is what blocks attempts to remotely access your computer through the internet, and an Anti-Virus scanner, such as AVG, is what keeps viruses and malware at bay. It is recommened to have both, although two anti-virus scanners or two firewalls might cause incompability errors or contradictions.

Ok. I got the mod to work on FLLM, after the following procedure:

1. Uninstalled FLLM
2. Uninstalled FL
3. Reinstalled FL
4. Reinstalled FLLM
5. Before installing the mod, I right-clicked the FLLM icon and went to Properties. Once there, I chose to operate the program in XP SP2 mode.
6. Then I right-clicked the icon again, and chose to run FLLM as an Administrator.
7. Then I activated the mod in FLLM as I normally did before I got this sorry excuse for an OS (Vista)

And thus I got the mod to work. Unfortunately, the mod will not de-activate, but at least it works .

Install Freelancer outside the Program Files directory, and make sure you are running it as the administrator account, and/or with administrator access, and that the shortcut has "Run as Administrator" ticked in the advanced settings dialog.

You may also attempt combining mentioned methods with setting compability to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

If you can't get it working, try to post the PRECISE errors from the error log of FL-MM.

Additionally, you can manually apply a mod by loading it into FL-MM, then going to the installation directory of FL-MM, opening the mod foldering, and copying the relevant folders into your Freelancer installation directory.

This has it's own risks, and you do it manually on your own warranty, as it is possible to mess up the Freelancer client if you do it wrong.

Again and again, remember that Windows Vista does not like it if you install games requiring modification into the Program Files directory, as it recognizes them as potential security holes. Install them into your user folder, usually C:\Users\UsernameHere\.

Any networking related issues may be the consequence of Windows Vista no longer supporting DirectPlay protocol. Games relying entirely upon DirectPlay will ultimately not work properly, or they will be unstable.

Here is something that may, or may not be of use, and it may or may not cause OS errors, use on your own warranty, you can not hold anyone but yourself accountable if you break something:

Run -> cmd.exe
bcdedit.exe/set nx AlwaysOff

This disables Data Execution Prevention. Does not open any security holes in particular, if your internet firewall and possible anti-virus are up to date.

After that, you can attempt to disable User Account Control entirely.

If you receive any memory errors, such as Access Violations, or Breakpoints, try disabling the frame buffering/shared VGA memory of your video card or chipset, if applicable as per case.

Data Execution Prevention, or DEP for short, is what keeps programs from springing up side-processes during execution.

As far as I know, DEP has undergone some... changes.. since Windows XP and might appear a little different by function and definition.

Be aware that these should be a last-resort kind of thing.

You can turn DEP back on with:

bcdedit.exe/set nx AlwaysOn
