My Opinion

Post by Asmodeus »

Just lately i have noticed something different here, other people giving other people grief over this thing or that.
As you all know i don't usually get involved in these matters. I come to read the forums to see what is new or old about the server.
One thing that as struck me is its getting far to personal and the problem with that is you don't know who you are talking too.
I could be Elvis Presley or a Mass Murderer you just don't no ? All i am asking is can people get back to the Game and have fun and stop B****ing at each other.

End of my little Rant.

I got no problem with it as long as certain people start behaving  - leopards dont change their spots unfortunately - and others have to learn not to take the bait quite so quickly whilst others should be a little more cautious about going "public" with problems.  Some people as plain as day should just not be playing here - that is quite clear enough.  However we are very good at giving out second and even third chances when "we" (as a community) feel it is appropriate - sometimes its not.   In the end its a game and whilst u may not particularly enjoy or agree with a certain persons stand point the fact remains that it is  - A Game.   Some folk need to start remembering that.  I became harder round the edges because of the cr@p that was going on and having people suck up to me and then abuse my good nature.  Im a bit of a sweety realy - Hard on the outside and soft on the inside, to some at least.

Point noted mate.  Lets see if the ignorant masses get the point - probably not but its at least worth a try....... ;)

zeb is the M&M void. =))

on topic tho, asmo you are correct, some want to medal to much in others buisness. others just cant get past that not all of us want to play the game the same way they do. that is what has always been the greatest thing about game play here. being able to come on and play the way you want. dont take thing so personal if one player does not see his game time being spent doing the same thing you want to do. it is just how he wants to play, not meant to tick anyone one else off just meant to have fun for that player.

however your game play should not be going around and trying to tick off all the others either. i think you can find plenty of players who want to play the way you want if you try.

have fun and a great day.

On subject.

I think the point is about showing a little respect to other players and keeping personal issues and affairs out of the game and Forums, but this seams to be the attitude of a number of players here, who feel the need to insult people over race, colour, creed, religion, hygiene habits... and anything else their petty brains can think of to use for their mindless amusement to the detriment of others.

I have played several games on many servers and this sort of thing goes on on all of them. Unfortunately there are childish highly competitive people all over In this group are also the players who just love giving others grief. What we as a community should do is develope a tolerance for these poor unfortunate players.  They are so needy for attention they simply must pick on others.Just remember they are probably acting out in a way that people in real life have treated them. There is nothing more sad than a person male or female who have been mistreated and the only way they can get revenge is to attack people in forums. As adults we should try and make allowances for these children or childish acting players.
Maverick Zeb as core members of the community (my opinion) it is placed on us to set an example for the others. That means we must not rise to thier 'baiting' or allow thier pettiness to influence our posts. This forum rates pretty well for policy inforcement and so forth. Plus freelancer is a game  that draws a variety of people. We and they must remember not every one plays the same way. I spoke at length last night to a new player who was ready to quit because he felt all he could do was trade and he hated that. Assisting him a little and offering some advice he saw a aspect of freelancer he would have missed and before it was over he was excited about what he could do. THAT  my friends is the satisfaction of the game.
Void seems to have the key for making a lasting server as proven by its longevity. I think we can weather the small bitter players who simply must grief others by simply ignoring them. This sounds a little silly but I believe it to be true. What they revel in is the attention thier sniping focuses on them. So if we just NOT respond in  any way they will eventually take liberties enough that they will hang themselves.
Let me close by saying as long as a player stays within the rules deal with it within the rules. If he steps outside the rules report it if you want. But by no means argue with them and satisfy thier ego Lets make the Voids and admins job easier by not cluttering thier mind with a lot of "chafe" . Let the griefers say what they will thier mouths are always the death of them.

Experience learns us that this is the way to make them stop. However, it has one kickback. It only deals with a part of the situation.

Not all of the grief is caused in replies on other peoples topics. A good part is caused by people posting topics. Flame topics, personal accusations for this or that, smart remarks and so on. The problem with this is that the damage has already been caused as soon as it is posted. Most of the time, posts like that leave the person to whom it is directed to not much of a choice, pushing him into a corner in my view. In this case the subject has 2 options:

- Ignore the post and (run the risk of) getting other community members look down on them or loose their trust in them;
- Reply in an effort to set right the accusation to prevent the above.

From behind your screen you would say option 1. Probably until it happens to you. You could very easily say that the most wise thing to do is ignore it. But most people won't let themself get insulted, certainly not by someone who is cowardly enough to do it from behind his screen, countless miles away from getting hurt. I've had it a few times, and the personal and the hostile and insulting air of such a post will not be accepted by many of us. Result: a reply in an effort to set it right or at least justify the accusations. And then we have it: A post with a reply, the start of a flame topic.
Personally I do not always blame the person replying. I am one of the ones rising to bait too fast. I got a big mouth and I know it. It has gotten me in trouble before since not everyone can appreciate my confronting approach. I am just not the kind of guy who let's someone insulting me get away easily. I don't know if it's my military background or something else, but that's who I am. And I know that it sometimes causes a topic to get from bad to worse, but I can't accept people insulting others without at least giving them a fierce response.
But I don't think I'm alone. There are very few of us who can just let personal insults slip off their shoulders without blinking. So I don't think the problem lies with the replyers. It lies with the posters of such topics.
Unfortunately, nobody can do anything preventing people from making posts like that. Or can we?

I don't know if this is the place for it, and I doubt if I should be the one proposing this, but I have an idea that's been on my mind for some time. It might help the moderators of the forum deal with this problem. And it's very honest and simple.

You get 3 chances. The first time you post a topic that is either insulting, flame-causing, targeted to someone personal in a negative way, or in any other way OBVIOUSLY (from the view of common sense) negatively charged, you get one point on your Avatar, added there by the forum moderators. It could be shown as a little skull or something, I don't know. Maybe just add something like 'first warning' to the account display name. Example: MAVERICK |
First Warning. It could also be made in green. Why? Because everyone can make slip-ups and mistakes.
The second time you toss it, you get your second skull or MAVERICK |
Second Warning! (maybe displayed in orange) This is your symbolic second warning. Even though this could still be your (second) unintentional slip-up, it leaves no doubt that you will have to be watching yourself on the future.
The third one will get you your third skull (gratz if you get here) or MAVERICK |
LAST WARNING! If you screw up after this, you are banned from the forum INDEFINATELY. No excuse possible, no 'other chances'. Over and done with, you had your chances. Goodbye and good riddens.

This system makes for a clear way of dealing with posters with bad intentions, and it has another pro: it also gives a heads-up to people who sometimes open their mouth to quick. like yours truly. For me, it would be a good way to be reminded I should 'Think Twice' next time. I agree with you it really shouldn't be necessary, but people make mistakes.

Leaves me to say I find this a very good topic and it was about time someone addressed this in the cordial fashion Asmo did it. I truly hope it will become more than just an 'opinion'-topic, and that it will create some possibilities for solutions, which is the hardest part of every problem.
You know that people can really be hurt by something as distant as a forum post. I think it needs to be actively addressed.

That's my 2 Eurocents.

~Peace I say.~

Some people are getting the point some are not. If someone lights a fire (flame) there as to be someone else to put wood on, the best thing to do is to not Even chop the tree so there is no wood to keep the fire burning and eventually it goes out and the flame lighter just sits in the cold.

You are right, without question bro. But in a community with several hundred members, you have a LOT of different characters. Some adult and wise, some kids and wise, some adults and childish, you name it. Not all of them can bring themself to just swallow the insult or flame because either they have an impulsive way of reacting, they don't feel like sitting about when they are personally attacked, or for a lot of other reasons I guess. In other words there is no way we can get everyone here to ignore flames. As a result there will always be someone rising to the bait, creating the feared type of topic.
In a way you could really compare the Void community with the RL world. Lots of people, lots of different characters, lots of different ways to respond.

In that regard, I still feel there should be some kind of mechanism acting against that.

But like I said, you are right. I just think it can't be achieved.
