I can only confirms this as i have magically gotten -3 points without any comment add-ons
Perhaps it would be best if only the admin staff members should be allowed to cast karma points but i think this one will mysteriously dissapear just like the Mood feature.

yea,it will only work if A. members use it wisely, obviously not occuring at the moment
B. a system put inplace so that the person who gave the point has to explain themself and there identity would not be hidden.
C. Staff of Void only ones capable of handing out these points
D. simply removed which would be a shame
that is my take on the options

Hello...

Ummm... Just a little something to add to Mav's comment.

I think when your giving Karma, it should first show the post that the Karma is being given for, then a mandatory comment on why you decided to give it out. Plus, a report abuse button or something, so that if someone gives you negative karma with no reason or just because you gave them negative karma, a copy of their actions are sent to Forum admins. If a person keeps getting reported, his Karma priviledges are removed for a period of time, and it should say so under his avatar.

I think that'd be pretty effective, apart from the unfortunate misuse of the "report abuse" button, which is bound to happen, which would flood the Forum admins with reports...

Yes? No?

What about players who can access two different computers and practically give themselves karma points by registering a new user and abuse away.
I already have my eyes on someone who's probbaly using this lame procedure.
The "Commnets to your karma" can also be abused by not adding any comment at all and keep everyone guessing
I also noticed that if you stay on the same page you can cast non-stop karma points for the same user or other users who have posted on the same page (i could for example give mightybean +20 and even go on to + "you name it" or "--" of course.

theres always ways to exploit it. We would simply have to trust the community, and ones which abused the system had it removed or other penalties

Or the temptation to boost their own karma points by creating a new user on another computer.

@Strail :i think that this website needs a feature wich shows players in-game merits for example how many mission a player has successfully completed or how many pvp frags he has made etc etc (something simiar to the post count ranks:Void Hero  Void Druid Void General etc etc)
It will probably attract a lot of players to the website and the game aswell.I still remember the DW clan wich gave each of their member a surten medal regarding the nr. for npc kills. Maybe adding something similar to those Medals right under the Avatars of the users of this website would look very cool and it can't possible be abused as it reflects the in-game stats of a player and nothing else. (probbaly sounds like a lot of work to you  :) ) i don't even know if it is possible to acchieve this. I am actually willing to give up the npc kills, mission numbers, money for a fresh new start and a fair start for everyone else.(maybe a player wipe is needed together with many new additional feature for the next mod) especially new ships and equipment (guns) if it is new players that you want to attract
Another idea just poped into my mind-- a rank related to how much time you have spend online--how many systems you have visited (everything shown under a players avatar) Given the fact that each member can have 5 in-game chars i really don;t know if this is possible.
Just my thoughts.

To give you my take on your idea m8:
To be honest I don't think this would be the right thing to do. For two reasons.

1: I think you should see the ingame performance of players and their behavior on the forums as 2 individual things. As the game is the 'playground', you could see the forum as the 'community home'. Take me for example. In game I am one of the reavers, not the best company to be in - RP wise of course. Reavers try to be the scum of the universe. On the forum I don't try to be scum so to speak. So if you would give community members rewards for their ingame accomplishments, you would get a corrupted picture of what they are actually like. Next to that members of 'evil' clans always run the risk of moans. If the moaners would be able to 'reward' the players of an evil clan, I think you would get a twisted picture.

2: Some players don't care about stats. You can again take me for example. I am not that much interested in NPC kills, frags, the number of systems I have visited or the jumpholes I have found. But I enjoy the game nothing less than the ones who do have an interest in that area. You should keep in mind that this server offers a range of possibilities to the players - not only statistic-related things. A player can be very active in game and do a great job on his RP, without ever finding more than 5 jumpholes or killing so many NPC's.

Regarding the clear separation of the ingame world and the forum one, I think one should keep the 2 separate when it comes to rewarding.

But aren't we making it a bit more scary than it really is? Ok I have gotten 2 anonymous '-' karma points, but what the heck. After that I didn't get anymore. So it seems people do use their common sense. If there would be a change to make on the karma points, I personally think the addition of a mandatory comment would suffice.

*EDIT*:
Or just use our brain.

I always think that as much tools we have, as much enjoy we can get, so I think this is a good idea. The question is simple, tools are not good or bad, How we use them make them bad or good

Frags,Karma, Forum............. are tools, think about that.
