- Epidemic Apathy -

Post by vector-x »

This was originaly posted by Whatchwolf but unfortunatly after the move an sql error comes up and i cant solve it for now,so im posting hes post again.

Here's how it looks to me....

It seems like people just don't care. Seriously. That's how it looks. We see so little in the way of player participation in RP activities, events, or creation of activity on the Void that it looks like no one actually cares.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm so enthusiastic and care so much that it looks like no one else does by comparison. Not that I'm some sort of Void saint or nonsense like that... don't get me wrong. I know I can't be on as much as I used to be, as much as I would like to be. But when I am... well...

I can't help wondering where the fun is anymore? Where??

This will probably be taken wrong, but I don't even see Admin much, in-game or in the Forums. Replies to posts? mmmm   Replies to PM's?  hmph. I know people are busy but geez. If it's not apathy what is it?

Why should someone care when it looks like spitting into the wind?

I was told a while ago but someone in a position of significance (who will remain anonymous) that the Void is dying. Is it?

So prove me wrong. The Boss is busting his @$$ making this place better. How are you going to put his work to good use? What do you want to do to make the Void more fun?  More than it is now? More like the way it was when it was THE place to be?

Who cares? What do you care about? Let me have it. Tell me... Tell us all.

Or prove me right and ignore this thread too.

(Keep it positive. I hope a Server Guard won't have to delete or edit obvious flames...)

Thanks, V.

It seems the last came first, so to speak, ... "I hope a Server Guard won't have to delete or edit obvious flames"

I am disappointed.

However, here we are again. And I would still like to see where we stand as far as players wanting to make the Void a better place for play. Like I said, a lot of work goes into this place.

It is true that I am in the US and out of the mainstream timezone when many other players are on. No question that I don't see it when there are maybe more than 10 players on very often.

Still, what bugs me is that we have changed from the cause-and-effect playing style of players interacting with players, clans against clans, alliances, all that fun stuff, to most of the time friendly, invitational PvP. They're all good, don't get me wrong, but that's like comparing playing catch between two people against a football game. Which would you rather do?

There's still breath left in the ol' boy, though. Battles do start. But as it was said in a reply on the original thread, clan seems at an all-time low.

That's my biggest concern. In short, it used to be a helluva lot more fun here. Frankly, that's the main reason I changed my involvement from SG to clan leader.... to put the best effort I can into trying to inject a little fun and do it without other things taking the little time I have for FL and to remove any possible appearance of conflict of interest while doing so. I want that decision to be a good one and to bear fruit. So I am stirring up the pot here and asking... maybe demanding that players stand up and say, Here's what I want to do to have more fun..." and lets get on with it.

Think about this: it was said time and again that players wanted a fun event... maybe something different. So I dreamed up the grandest tournament of all, with a little of everything to make all players equal by balancing out the different ways players play and by the different skills we all have. Ideas came up about how to make it better and I worked them in. I decided to split it up so players could have a better chance to participate in the whole thing. In the forum there was lots of enthusiasm. What really happened was.... 6 players signed up. 6. Can you believe it??? 6!!

That's apathy. That's what I'm talking about.

Well?

If I'm the only one who feels this way tell me and I'll take my ball and go home. Otherwise, let's hear it.

Gimme until next year, and I think I'm going to have to join another clan and give up this Outcasts thing.

You can count me as being one of the people that isn't apathetic, thats going to try as hard as he can to get things up and running again (like yourself) :).

Easy big fellas I don't think the apathy is that bad. You guys have to remember we have just come thru a rough patch on the forums. I mean for a little bit it seems every constructive post was spammed with a dozen negative ones Plus we have to realize that the situation we are all looking at in RL takes a little enthusiasium out of us.
But take heart all as everyone knows I trade a lot and do a lot of exploring. The last few weeks I have been allowed to do both unhindered but pirates or rogues. In the last few days I have had to elude more than one trap so I know for a fact people are perking up. I even had a noob in a rhino try and follow and figure out the run I was making. Unfortunately for him a couple of the systems are somewhat hostile LOL.
I see a lot of life here yet with new players signing on every day. Almost every event brings more and more [participation. So keep plugging away at it you guys are doing a great job.

There is always an additional challenge as players adjust to a new mod, but we will make it through this as we always have. There has been a lot of thought put into this mod as well as a lot of work from many people. Void Gan has innitiated a number of events lately, with some pretty awsome RP.  In game today I saw event staff, many Void server staff and even the boss himself. Some of the older clans like BBB and KBA are showing up more on the server, and from an FAQ perspective we are actually seeing a fair number of people returning to FL. Admins are usually only a phone call away, (within relation to their time zones of course). Today in alex there was some good ol fashioned pirate vrs navy at the alex gates, with a lil added spice of a battleship being involved. The Captital sips offer some new oppertunity, and the dynamic economy shows the promise of some pretty sweet finances, watch your rep, keep your maps handy and you are good to go!

Every day I log on here I get some form of positive feedback from players, it can range from a simple thank you to some one telling me the server is so great they've decided to stay after checking it out. I also hear the other side of the coin too, but its up to me what I make of it. I got my start in FL here on Void, and I love this place. I know I'm willing to do whatever it takes to keep this place going, and I know others that are willing to do the same. RL gets in the way sometimes, but it always will - that's life plain and simple. A lot of staff have been busy working to bring out this mod, and there is still a ways to go yet, so hang tight and we'll get em back in game to play again once things settle down a little bit,  The UK time zone runs a pretty strong player base, and the US one is starting to pick up the pace again. Of course as an international server there are many other countries contributing here as well. I've been through a lot in RL to make my way back here...and I intend to stick arround.

Mystic her post pretty much sums up my thoughts about this. But I would like to try and retype my original reply:

I know what Watchwolf is referring too. I see it in the lack of replies to the Reaver and other RP threads. There seems to be a little decrease in player enthusiasm for RP. The Reavers in its new form have taken up the goal to provide for more RP fun. To give all players a common enemy and provide a constant threat in the game. Like I said before we are still working to fully get this idea rolling, but tonight will be our second attempt.
Apart from the RP I don't think it's too bad. Especially now with the new mod in place I think things will only change for the better. The new cap ship, the fixed Titanium Crusher, the new dynamic economy, and new big transport ships coming in the next releases and much more, will and does make players exited again.
I would like to encourage people to respond more to RP threads. Like I said in my previous reply, it doesn't matter if you are not that good in RP talk. You effort will be appreciated very much. You watch, when people start to give some response to the RP effort made, it will once again be something that has the potential to bring a lot of fun to the RP part of this server.
As I said the new Reavers their main goal is just that. But we can't do it alone. 'It takes two to Tango', if you will. We need you all to make it work.

Mystic makes a good point about what we see in FAQ. Indeed we see a lot of new players signing up every day, and we do get a lot of positive feedback. Luckily far more than negative ones. This server still seems to have the spark to attract new players and keep them committed.
The server will be here as long as we are. And since there are still many new people signing up, I still can see a bright future for us. But WW is right: we should not be sitting back. I promise you that if more people will respond to the RP efforts of some of the clans, there will be even more fun, and thus will this server be an ever cooler place to play.

I have already stated my opinions regarding what may cause this Epidemic Apathy (especially on the forums) repeating them will probably cause another "sql error" so i think it would be best to leave it as it is.
It's not like i am angry at some ppl it's just that i am very disappointed in them...yes,disappointment that's the word wich describes it the best.

Likewise.  But as always when a vacum occurs and people take their whole team elsewhere it does seem to show a distiinct lack of individual thought.  Dont get me wrong - I understand that loyalty has a big part to play in it.  However there are certain elelments in gameplay that you can live without and thankfully they have removed themselves from here.  When this happens you have a flux of players - as many new ones have turned up as those that left.

A period of settling in is required - now Im no socioligist so I cant put a finite time on this.  RAF are recovering from a bumpy patch.  From some elements there is whinging - but that will settle down once we "educate" them in the nicest possible way of course!

I agree - there is apathy and there needs to be a better focus from the remaining clans in regard to this.

I am working on a battleship killer setup. Those with clan battleships could be working on their formations and combating the fighter wing threat.  In my -=REAVERS=- Vermin character I had a pop at several battleships in the Alex gate area - all good fun even if I did get toasted...!

Apathy is cureable - but only if those players want it cured...!

this in my honest opinion is due to the following its called change fellas, the standards and values of the older generations are clashing with the youth of today and unlike the old days where if for example you wer hanging around on street corners you were told to move you did, but not nowadays same situation if told to move your gonna have 15 little hoddie twats stabbing you right up. to be honest no1 actually cares anymore and those that do more fool you for believing that this world we live in is all nicey nicey as it aint i can give you living proof of that.

hence why i started the admire me thread i just wanna spread a little love as it seems to be lacking it everywhere else - im just 1 man fighting a never ending battle

:D Your efforts have not gone unoticed.  A valid point.  The age spread here is wide.  Whilst this may well be true it is also the case that the majority here at the moment are "finding their feet" and they have come from other servers where they may not be quite so "dynamic" in certain areas.  It needs a concerted effort on behalf of all the present established clans here to jump start some activity.  Its an odd time in the world - credit crunchs etc and a lot of people are working extra hours and making changes in their lives so consequently fewer players are on as often as they used to be - this is just part of the picture.

Watchwolf's efforts are not unappreciated as are others in the EVENTS and FAQ team. VOID also have a role to play in this too.

Keep up the good work - the worst thing is to give up and let apathy win...!

Yes it is my friend. But some people (even single individuals) can make it darn hard for one to keep having faith and stay motivated. Certain things can make a man run out of GaS (Give a Sh*t) real fast. I have been very very close more than once. A lot of people don't give their words or behavior enough thought before they vent them. They sometimes do not realize what the effects of their acts can be. The (often very hard) solution in all of this is to keep focused on the positive side and the potential of certain things. Trying to enhance the positive, instead of fighting the negative if you will. This has been my new approach for the last few weeks and I have found it to be fruitful and rewarding. If you keep looking at the possibilities and keep working to that goal, you make a fair chance on reaching your goals. Unfortunately nothing gets handed to one on a silver platter. You have to work for it and chew on and spit out the obstacles and disappointments. An encouraging word can work miracles for someone's motivation in a situation like this. So thanks buddy. :)

And for everyone who is in one way or another working to add to the fun in our community: Your efforts are greatly appreciated! Each and every one of you is doing a great job. In fact this place wouldn't be the same without you and your efforts. I for one applaud you!  =D> Keep doing what you do and keep looking at the possibilities people. The Void needs you.
