Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
Would anyone recommend the use of light fighters for pvp and high-level missions or would it be a horrible idea?

Re: Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
For pvp light fighters can be excellent, as long as you know how to fly them, and this is where the difficulty lies. Small and therefore fast and agile fighters respond very differently to your commands and require a totally different way of handling compared to heavier fighters. But as I said, if flown right, for example a Crow loaded with all lasers can be a true menace to any other fighter. It can really leave your opponent standing as he doesn't even get your ship on his screen.
For missions however, I would never recommend a light fighter. For any high level mission, you should simply fall back and rely on the massive armor, weapons and power ratings of the Very Heavy Fighters. With the Anubis as my personal favorite. It's really as simple as that. Just try to take on a group of 4 or more Robots, Monkeys, Order, Nomads, or Hel fighters with your light fighter, and you will know why on your very first try. I doubt if you will even survive the first pass, they just don't have the armor to cope with the number of high damage output weapons hitting your hull, nor do they have the power rating to sustain the relatively long bursts of weapon fire to bring down the high classed ships you will encounter on a high-level mission.
There could be an exception to this. But you need to be quite experienced to do this. It can be a real challenge to take a light fighter like a Discoverer or a Crow into battle against a squadron of one of the factions listed above. You will have to rely on your ability to move your agile little ship the right way, and your stamina, as your limited amount of weapons and power reserve will do only limited damage to your enemy. But it can be quite fun if you succeed. And really frustrating if you don't.
So to recap for you:
*- Light fighters for high-level missions: Only if you're up for a challenge and have the endurance. Wouldn't recommend it in general.
*- Light fighters for pvp: Can prove very rewarding, but requires a great deal of practice and experience.
Hope this helps.

Re: Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
Thank you for your inputs!
During high leveled missions, I could actually survive decently well with discovery. But discovery's damage output hull is very, very, very low since missiles do not hit as often and as hard as in offline mode. In story mode, I'd have one missile launcher and, when I get into close range, boom goes 95% of the opponent's hull in a critical hit xD. That evened out LFs and HFs as far as missions are concerned. But, online, I can use 650000 credits worth of cannonballs in a 500000 credit mission and not be able to finish it xD (takes too long).
In pvp, missiles should not do offline-type damage. But is it fair that hull damage missiles are toned down so much against ncps too?

@Maverick: I know the feeling, once me and a friend took on a hard mission in Wolfhounds, and it took about 20mins to take down 2 Hammerheads XD

Lol,got to agree with Mav on that.
If u want something that can be good for both pvp and missions, especially against Nomds go for something in between,a heavy fighter instead of a VHF or LF.

I've been there too...I've spent over 45 minutes fighting Valkyrie N1s in a Sabre. (Loaded with Class 10 White Fires...remember kids, look at the damage output before you buy the weapon... *winces*)
And then... "Good job, but you're not done yet. There are more hostiles at the next waypoint." #-o
Well, you live and learn, I guess.
And by the way...the weapons you're carrying can be just as important as the ship you're flying. Brawler setups dish out more damage at a much faster rate than Nomad Lasers can. Try going after NPC's with a sniper setup...it does work, but it takes a bit longer.

Re: Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
I must say I favour my Anni for missions and NPC kills though I have taken down several robots without getting killed in a Crow (ofcourse it was with a lot of luck, had to regen all the time, and had help from some friendly nomads)
I would love to keep in touch with people from the Void if you ever transfer onto other games. Feel free to contact me one:

What kind of guns should I use for a sniper set up? 1.00 refire rate guns?

Re: Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
Yeah the best 1.00 refire rate guns are the Nomad Lasers. You could also put one Screamer gun or turret along with them, - which also has 1.00 refire rate - to take down shields in one shot. But to be honest a whole bunch of lasers together will not have any difficulty doing exactly that.
By the way are you sure you don't want to train your brawling skills? Believe me it's much more of a challenge if you ask me.

Re: Light fighters for PvP and Missions?
I have a brawler set up when using a very heavy fighter--I can afford to continuously bash on opponents in missions. However, when using light fighters, I have to constantly be moving around and probably will have one shot at an opponent at a time. So, I'm thinking of using sniper set up for light fighters in missions. Think it's a good idea? LF's are a huge challenge in missions already, no need to make it worse.

Man your argumentation is spot on. You're absolutely right: if you are going for a light fighter anyway, you might be best off with a sniper setup.
Good luck with your daring adventure!
