Stutters

Post by JungChang »

Hey,

I need some help with a tech problem on Freelancer.
Everytime i log on i seem to be getting lots of stutters. My internet connection is fine. And i have all the latest drivers.
I have recently installed a Dual Core CPU, would this have anything to do with the stutters.
I am running XP so its not a vista issue.

i have:

X1950Pro
2gb Ram
AMD X2 Dual Core 4200+

Thanks in advance.

well its obviously a hardware issue, although with specs like that i dont thinkyou should be stuttering lol ;)

maybe tweak with the gfx card settings etc?

Turn off automatic scanning antivirus utilities, they have a habit of causing normal cache read/write operations which Freelancer uses a lot of to be slowed down by the software scanning every single file Freelancer tries to load.

Also try running Freelancer in compatibility mode for windows 98/ME which should force that silly great  cpu you bought to operate in a less overpowered way although this is NOT a promise..you could also start freelancer, press alt+tab and then ctrl+alt+del look in the processes tab for freelancer.exe right click it and choose set affinity and force it to use only 1 core (doesn't matter which one) since fl doesn't like multicore/hyperthreaded cpus very much

BTW, it ran slightly better in 2000 mode.

And when i Alt tab, then Ctrl Alt Delete and change the cores, it shows CPU 0 and CPU 1. Ive tried unticking each but still nothing.

All updates are up to date. Im pretty sure its something to do with the CPU. Because i never had this issue before i installed it.
I'll keep asking around for some help, maybe some tech forums can give me some extra info.
Thanks to everyone who has given suggestions and help.

You could always go to the website for whatever company made your PC. Most of them have an option for "live tech support chat". HP does and that's how I have fixed my computer in the past. They are usually very helpful. It's just a thought. Good luck mate.I hope you get it fixed soon.

I assume you have a sata hard drive in that thing so you "could" try fiddling with the hardware caching.

Right click My Computer and choose "properties" then click the "hardware" tab and click the "Device manager" button.

Look for "Disk drives" and click the little + sign to expand the menu..right click your harddrive and choose properties, click the "Policies" tab and check the "Write Caching" option. While this may improve day to day operations with your harddrive it is also important to note that cached data that hasn't been written yet will be lost if you experience a power failure or you do not shut down your pc correctly.

Next up is the UDMA setting..once again in your device manager look for Sata/raid controller and click the + to expand the menu..right click the Primary raid controller and choose advanced...make sure the transfer options for each connected device read "dma if available" and that a udma mode is selected (you don't get a choice which udma mode though)...if you have IDE drives do the same but with IDE instead of Sata/raid.

Good luck.

PS doube check your motherboard drivers, virtually everyone forgets these when upgrading drivers yet these are by far the most important ones...if you are technically adept enough you may want to consider flashing your motherboard bios to a more uptodate version which may very well resolve your issue...do NOT flash bioses unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing!!!

I'll tell you what, I know it won't be the case in your situation as your computer is up to scratch, but for me, I've rarely noticed it much before but I had never really thought about the good old hot, humid summers days effecting my poor little processor. My computer suffers to keep cool in the summers, at some stages its hit 70 for brief moments and I know thats not healthy. I downclocked it last year to sort that issue, just seems for me that sometimes running a little higher probably makes mine run quite choppy sometimes.
