Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
Yeah, But have you seen the file size of the demo, its clocking in at around 4GB's, and thats only for one hours of play xD. So the xbox is having concerns over the amount of storage they will be able to have on the game. The game for the xbox users will probable have to be over 2 or 3 double sided disks, as one of those can only store up to around 17GB of information, wheres a single blue ray can hold a lot more
. So the Xbox graphics will either takes a big hit in the graphics department or will have to compress all their files making the game have long loading times etc.
Will be interesting to see and the game is gunna be immense

Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
Making a deliberately inferior version for a more popular console is comercial suicide...Even the mighty ID software recognised this simple fact.
The Bluray format is at present a complete waste of time for gaming, yes it can store 50gigs of data versus 8.5gigs on a standard dual layer DVD, but anyone producing a game which needs 50gigs when the machines in question only have 512megs of ram is simply not doing their job right and is spending way more money than they'll ever make back in sales. I can site you plenty of examples of N64 games wedged onto 1 64meg cart compared to 2 or even 3 cds on PS1, and the ONLY game to utilise the Bluray's full capacity thus far has been metal gear which fills the Bluray up with nonsensical 2 hour cutscenes badly translated from japanese rather than with solid game content (in fact the game content suffers because of this rather than gains).
For a PS3 exculsive title it almost makes sense to utilise Bluray but Sony do not have sufficient market share to justify the expence (that honour goes to the Wii, which incidentally uses DVD5 as it's primary disk format.)
Storage is the only real difference between the 360 and the PS3 anyway, the PS3 has a more powerful, but more complicated CPU than the 360 but the 360 has a much more powerful GPU than the PS3 making them basically even in all respects aside from disk format, the DVD drive on the 360 can load data at a faster rate than the Bluray format anyway (Bluray manages to hold more data through more efficient compression and narrower channels on the same sized surface making it slower) Both machines have to heavily compress sound, textures ect ect anyway in order to use them within their 512meg memory limits.

Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
Oh gods, let's not PS3 versus X360 territory here- if there's anyone here not sick to their back teeth of hearing the same points and counterarguments over and over again they can just spend five minutes on any given gaming forum and soon will be.
With that said, I did also hear a rumour that FFXIII was going to be using something close to the PS3s full potential. What that means for the X360 version, I don't know. If it is going to be a case of commercial suicide it might be about bloody time in Square's case.
It seems everything I liked about the Final Fantasy series has been slowly bleeding out of it since the end of the halcyon days of the VI - IX era. For me, the first warning sign came when I was reading an interview prior to the release of Final Fantasy VIII, in which one of the developers was quoted as saying "VII was dark, weird- we wanted to move away from all that".
However, despite the promised departure from the wonderfully dark atmosphere evoked in the seventh instalment, the eighth was still pretty good, even by the standard I'd come to expect from the series, and the ninth was if anything weirder, albeit apparently straying to the more whimsical side of things.
No, X was the one that really made me worry- not only did it bring horrible voice acting into the mix, but players find themselves sodding around on a succession of tropical beaches and/or playing horrible, protracted games of magical rugby in giant spheres of water. The only thing that redeemed it in my eyes was the interesting summoning system, but it was hardly worth buying just for that. Unfortunately it seemed to go downhill from there- X-2 didn't even feel like a Final Fantasy game to me, and that was the least of its problems; XI was inexplicably a pay-every-bloody-month-for-the-privilege-of-playing-it-online thingy, and I don't hold with that sort of thing, (as can be evidenced by the fact that I'm here and not mining asteroids and buying insurance on EVE) but the other reason that the game failed so miserably in appealing to me was that the core Final Fantasy games have very much been a single player thing. As for XII, I took one look at the back of the box and refused to buy it.
I could tell it wasn't going to be what I was looking for.
And now we have this. I may well buy it just out of sheer curiosity, but I'm not getting my hopes up over it.
For example, those gameplay trailers reminded me a little too much of Zanarkand at the start of X, and it seems to have inherited X-2s bewildering combat system wherein I found I could kill an enemy while it was in the middle of an attack, even with the ATB set to 'wait'. I have nothing against action combat, but they seem to be trying to make some sort of twisted hybrid of that and turn-based combat.
...Oh. I seem to have attempted to write a full-blown review about this.
You'll probably want to stop me from getting carried away like that in future.

Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
they are still doing there jobs properly as they will only need to use the 512 MB when they are doing certain functions for the game, EG loading new maps etc. So when its loading one area it will only use the 512MB for that part. The reason the file is going to be so big is because of the quality of the rendering of the movies that the square enix team creates. So if the blue format can hold all of the information about the movies and the game play maps etc then it would make sense put it all on one disk.
In theory they could easily put the game over many disks for the Xbox but I read in an interview that they don't want to put it over many disks and may have to either highly compress the movies etc or just knock the quality down some.
As for the whole PS3 vs Xbox thing, I don't really want to get into a debate about which is better, but there are very conclusive tests that show the PS3 has the better hardware and more capabilities then the Xbox, Considering the PS3 is still relatively new game developers haven't really had a chance to fully utilise the capability of the machine and will start to do so in the up coming years. and installing a Huge game on the storage space if of the Xbox or the PS3 would be silly because it would probably take up most of the hard drive on all specs of either machine, so would probably be avoided.
Kumori - You got some good points mate, FF8 was indeed my favourite out of the lot and FFX was a close second. Although FFX-2 was ummm, utter crap? FF13 has been dubbed as a lot darker than the other games with FF13 versus being even darker and twisted. (thats the PS3 exclusive by the way). I'm not a big fan of the whole FFX-2 battle system and I did prefer the old Turn based system back in the days, but it seems they want to move away from that. Which I think is a shame, but it seems as though the turn based system they are using now will be a little better, I hope its MUCH MUCH better as i really couldn't stand using tech sphere cores etc. omg what a pile of crap that was. and I'm glad they aren't using the same system that FF-12 used, The whole Gambit crap really pissed me off, As I could leave my chars AFK and farm myself to level 100 by using gambits and continuosly spawning enemies, and never die.... lol.
But either way, its gunna be an insane game xD.

Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
I've never played a Final Fantasy game but I definitely want to get this game on PS3 since I like what I'm seeing in the previews.
With that being said, since I've never played any of the previous FF games, will I be able to understand what's going on in the new game or will I be lost?

true enough about the use of ram, but seriously if you can't fit your game onto one dual layer dvd you want sacking.
Incidentally I rather liked FF7 on the PS1 although I did find the "run, get into random fight, run, get into random fight, run, run, get into random fight" gameplay quite tedious, I guess it's a Japanese thing that i just don't get, Shenmue had a similar mechanic that was also quite irritating.

Again a fair point, but if they use H264 instead of VC1 they can fit over 3 hours of 1080p video onto one DVD5, that's half a DVD9, and if you can see the difference in "quality" you have better eyesight than superman. The reason the file is going to be so big is because of the quality of the rendering of the movies that the square enix team creates. So if the blue format can hold all of the information about the movies and the game play maps etc then it would make sense put it all on one disk.
This is because of the royalty charges Microsoft put on each disk sold, more disks means less profit for Square/Enix per game sold if they go the multiple disks route. To be honest they'd be better off making it a PS3 exclusive title, Sony practically own Square/Enix anyway. In theory they could easily put the game over many disks for the Xbox but I read in an interview that they don't want to put it over many disks and may have to either highly compress the movies etc or just knock the quality down some.
That's also true the CPU of the PS3 is a beast of a thing, however it's weakness isn't just that it's difficult to code for it's that it's IMPOSSIBLE to code for. The CELL CPU will always do what IT wants rather than what the game asks, for example if you want to assign one core out of the 8 (6 active cores, 1 controller and one spare) to do all the physics for you, you can't, the CELL chip makes that call for itself, unlike the 3 cores of the 360 which do as they're told. Then where the GPU's are concerned the ATI/AMD chip in the 360 is quite a lot more powerful than the Nvidia chip in the PS3, you wont see a visible difference though because both machines have to compress the smeg out of each frame they render to fit them into their puny frame buffers before they appear on the screen. Any improvements in graphics you can expect to see in the future on both platforms will be down to more efficient compression in the frame buffer, or cleverer use of certain special effects like parallax mapping to reduce the amount of geometry in use...and that's about it..both machines have already had all the raw grunt available used quite thouroughly. This generation is NOT like the PS1/N64 generation, both those machines improved tenfold in their lifespans, so too did the PS2, the current crop have peaked early and been surpassed by PC hardware almost instantly (it took 4 years for PC graphics cards to finally match up to the PS2, the 360 and PS3's chips got nailed in about 3 months, neither are equal to an Nvidia 8600 or ATI equivalent. Add to that a 3ghtz Intel quadcore outperforms the CELL chip in nearly every way).As for the whole PS3 vs Xbox thing, I don't really want to get into a debate about which is better, but there are very conclusive tests that show the PS3 has the better hardware and more capabilities then the Xbox, Considering the PS3 is still relatively new game developers haven't really had a chance to fully utilise the capability of the machine and will start to do so in the up coming years.

Re: For Molten and others with PS3's
The storyline of each game is completely separate, it's not like one big story split up into episodes. The only exceptions I can think of are X-2 and the various FFVII prequels and sequels, but they're easy to identify since they don't use the same numbering format as what you could call the 'core' games of the series.URAMI wrote:With that being said, since I've never played any of the previous FF games, will I be able to understand what's going on in the new game or will I be lost?
That said, if the previous games are anything to go by, the story of FFXIII will be terribly complicated and personally I'll probably need to play through it at least twice to fully understand what's going on.
In short, whether you'll be lost or not won't depend on whether you've played the previous games.
